Riley lay awake in her tent, listening to Reece and Brady muttering to each other by the fire. She wanted nothing more than to drift off into sweet oblivion for eight hours, but a good night’s sleep had become a forgotten luxury. In the three days since parting with Santi, she hadn’t had more than two or three hours per night. Still not recovered from the snake bike, Riley wasn’t sure how much longer she could go on without proper rest.

She’d woken just after midnight the night Santi left to find Reece riding away from camp. She’d stayed awake the rest of the night waiting for him to return. As she was getting dressed in her tent before going out to get the breakfast fire started, Reece rode back into camp, tethered his horse and went to his tent to sleep. He didn’t emerge until eleven, despite Brady’s repeated efforts to wake him. Fuming from him making them late getting on the road, Riley finally dumped a cup of cold water on him. Reece shot up and cocked his fist, then backed down when he realized what was happening. When he finally came out for coffee, his breath reeked of booze. Riley had it out with him, warning that if he pulled that again, he was done.

To her immense disappointment, the pattern repeated itself the following night, except Brady went with him that time. Riley didn’t alcohol on him when he came out of his tent at ten the next morning. She assumed Reece had taken him along as the “designated driver” of sorts. When Riley repeated the water trick that second morning, Reece sat up and aimed a small caliber handgun at her. He hadn’t left Fort Worth with a weapon, so she could only guess he’d stolen it somewhere along the way. She backed out of his tent. It was the last straw. She asked Brady to separate their gear from hers so she could go on without them. Reece came out and ordered Brady to stop. He apologized to Riley and told her he was just goofing around.

Riley pretended to accept his apology but insisted he give her the gun. His eyes flashed as he hesitated for a moment before reaching into his waistband and handing the weapon over to her. She behaved as if the incident was forgotten but secretly began planning her exit strategy. She berated herself for not listening to Santi, but she’d felt trapped with no other choice. Now she was trapped in a worse way and was far more afraid of Reece than any rattlesnake.

That third day passed with Reece cheerfully cooperative, but Riley didn’t buy his act. She lay in her tent that night, waiting for the boys to either sneak off or go to their tents so she could make her escape. But they just kept jawing away by the fire. As hard as she tried to fight it, her exhaustion got the best of her sometime around one. She woke with a start three hours later to the worst situation she could imagine.
