“Talon, wow, my God. These pieces are incredible.” I continue to admire her while she marvels at my paintings. The wonderment in those striking eyes while she regards each one makes my heart swell. I’ve not shared my paintings with anyone–well, other than Taylor, of course. Every piece holds a different meaning to me and is a projection of my private thoughts and feelings. Most of which I painted after I lost Taylor, after I isolated myself from everyone. It was the only thing that helped me manage my grief—well, that and a detrimental volume of alcohol consumption. “These paintings deserve to be exhibited in a gallery, not shoved in a corner of your studio, gathering dust. Why on earth would you hide them away?” Rein questions, her wide and curious eyes burning imploringly into my own as I move towards her.

“Because they weren’t painted with the intention of ever being seen by anyone other than me,” I state and take the painting from her and place it back on the floor. “I’ve never felt comfortable with the idea of having my work hanging up in some gallery or in some random strangers house. Particularly if they’re derived by my private thoughts and feelings.”

Those paintings do nothing but drag up dark memories I’d rather keep buried. Each one is a depiction of how broken and how screwed up my head was after Taylor died. My mind was a bleak and chilling place back then and just the thought of falling back into that endless pit of torment scares me shitless.

“Art is never finished, Professor, only abandoned.”

I smile and rub my jaw, taking a step closer to her. “Leonardo Di Vinci.” Rein nods, watching me raptly as I near her. “Oh, so you do manage to take a break from daydreaming long enough to tune into my class from time to time. That’s good to know,” I drawl playfully, taking hold of her forearm and tugging her flush against me.

Rein’s eyes light up, glittering like two precious jewels, beguiling me through and through. Her head cocks to the side and she regards me closely, a playful smile gracing her lips. “Oh, Professor, I assure you, I don’t miss a single word that comes out of your mouth.”

My brow lifts with intrigue. I stare into her eyes. “You don’t, huh?”

Rein shakes her head slowly; her eyes remain fixed on mine. “Absolutely not. The accent, the articulate manner you speak, and the smooth yet deep tone of your voice is just so…” She trails off and swallows thickly. “Erotic,” she finishes with a breathy whisper, her eyes lowering to my lips when I shuffle closer. “You could read me the phonebook and I’ll still be wholly immersed in every single word.”

Shit. This girl is on a secret quest to drive me senseless.

“I’m familiar with the feeling. The way you feel about my voice is the way I feel about your eyes.” Rein’s eyes close as my lips brush against the shell of her ear when I speak to her in a low, sensual tone.
