Chapter Seventeen
David got to his feet as Guy entered the lair. For the first time in all the years I had known him, he seemed unsure of himself. At eight years his junior, Guy brimmed with energy and confidence.
The two wore identical olive Barbour jackets. But while Davidâs identified him as a DFL â down-from-London â a city person wearing country attire as a fashion statement, Guyâs looked pretty beaten up and he fitted right in.
He handed me a glass and kissed my cheek before turning to David, whose expression I could only describe as rigid.
Sensing the tension, Guy thrust out a hand. âGuy Evans, hello. And you are?â
âDavid Wynne,â said David. âDrinking so early in the day?â
âHere, take mine,â Guy said gallantly.
David sneered. âI was being sarcastic.â
âReally? Whatever for?â Guy raised his glass to mine in a toast. âCheers! Merry Christmas!â
I took a larger gulp than Iâd planned on. My nerves were going through the roof as David just stood there watching.
âGuyâs a helicopter pilot at the Royal Naval Air Station in Yeovilton,â I said.
âRescuing people off clifftops?â David said.
âSmall dogs usually,â said Guy. âWe prefer to leave the people behind.â
I laughed. David didnât.
âDavid is an art investigator,â I said.
At this, Guy frowned. âI thought the name sounded familiar. Youâre the male version of Rene Russo in The Thomas Crown Affair.â
âI loved that movie,â I gushed.
âI preferred the original version with Steve McQueen and Faye Dunaway,â said David with a sniff.
âI believe that version is playing at the Totnes Cinema,â Guy said. âThey show old movies. Wait â¦â He snapped his fingers. âI know where Iâve heard your name before. You impersonated an art dealer and recovered a painting in Venezuela that had been stolen by the Nazis. It was all over the newspapers.â
âGuy is a bit of a painting connoisseur,â I put in.
Instead of preening his feathers at being recognised, David seemed miffed. âKat didnât tell you about us?â
I didnât think things could get any more awkward. The truth was, I hadnât told Guy too much about my past. Weâd not spent enough time together to go there. And when Iâd asked him about the circumstances surrounding his divorce, he had just said, âI never look back. No one lives there any more.â
âTell me what?â Guy asked.
David looked at me and smiled. âShe and I were ⦠an item for a long, long time.â
âAnd you let her go?â Guy laughed. âBad luck, mate.â He grabbed my shoulders and pulled me close. âThank you for that. Iâm a lucky man.â
I braced myself for another of Davidâs cutting remarks, but all he said was, âYouâre right. I made a mistake. But as the saying goes, nothing is over until the fat lady sings. Iâll see you at the auction on Wednesday. Enjoy the mulled wine.â
And with that, he was gone.
I felt a little shaken and was grateful when the couple who had come by earlier returned to buy the doll â just as David had predicted. Even though David and
