Honey bounded across the isolation room in two effortless strides, his lithe orange body gliding through the air with feline grace before he landed on the enchanted cat plate. His soft belly fur shimmered and rippled briefly as his paws came into contact with the plate’s glowing crystalline surface.

I crouched down so I was at eye level with the tabby. “Honey, we’re trying to figure out who killed Ben. We know this will be difficult for you, but we think you may be the only one who knows about Ben’s relationships. Would you mind if we asked you some questions about them?”

Belladonna came careening into the isolation room in a streak of inky black, colliding with Honey and knocking him bodily from the enchanted cubby with a resonant thud. Honey yowled in protest, landing in an ungainly sprawl of orange fur and flailing limbs on the floor below. From her perch atop the plate, Belladonna scoffed, peering down her nose at Honey’s form with contempt. “Oh, please. I find it difficult to believe that the insipid ginger fur ball possesses anything of substance within the confines of his empty head.”

“Hush, you,” I told her. “Go sit over there.”

She sniffed but did as I asked.

Honey sighed and returned to the talking perch, his ears back as he hissed at Belladonna. “Must you always arrive unannounced and unwelcome, you vainglorious harpy?” Turning to me, he said, “It’s true. Ben did confide in me at times. We lived together for years, after all.”

“What can you tell us about Nina?” Evie asked gently. “Were she and Ben romantically involved?”

“Nina?” The tabby shook his head. “No, that’s not true at all. Nina and Ben were rival beekeepers. She resented his success, but there was no affair.”

I exchanged a glance with Evie. One suspicion down, at least. “What about Augusta, the baker? How did Ben feel about her?”

“Augusta was...possessive of Ben,” Honey said carefully. “Their relationship was passionate but tempestuous. They were always fighting or making up, on and off again like a merry-go-round. Ben said she could be jealous and controlling. Honestly, I think he was considering permanently ending things with her.”

“Because of her jealousy?” Matt asked.

Honey dragged his rough, pink tongue slowly over his lips. “Partly. And because Ben felt Augusta didn’t trust him and was trying to dictate who he spent time with. The argument with Tom you mentioned started because Augusta saw Ben talking to Nina and accused him of flirting with her.”

Evie looked confused. “I don’t understand. How did Tom find out that Augusta thought Ben was flirting? Were Augusta and Tom talking?”

Before Honey could respond to Evie’s question, the isolation room door banged open behind us, and Honey leaped upward from the glowing cat plate with an alarmed yowl. Landing unsteadily, he spun quickly, searching for the source of his terror.

We, meanwhile, had already turned to find Mario in the doorway staring at the glowing cat plate. I hoped that he hadn’t heard anything yet—

Hopes that were dashed when Honey spied the unexpected intruder.
