The phone number was right there on his website, and I quickly dialed it. With Madame listening, I called as the representative of the Village Blend and asked to speak with someone about a distribution contract.

“You may talk to me, Ms. Cosi. I am Mr. Foxe’s personal assistant, Darla.”

“Hello, Darla. I’d like to purchase your honey and flowers to supply my coffeehouses in New York and Washington, DC.”

“I see. Exactly how many coffeehouses do you own in New York and Washington?”

“One in each city.”

“No, no, Ms. Cosi,” Darla chirped condescendingly, “Mr. Foxe is only looking for large distribution partners, not a small concern like yours. I advise you to check our website for vendors who will sell you our products at retail.”

Without even a goodbye, the woman hung up.

Madame sighed. “Well, when honesty fails, dear, we sometimes must fall back on . . . dissembling.”

“Fine, what are we going to lie about?”

Madame’s expression turned sly. “I wonder how Mr. Foxe and that assistant of his would respond to the chance to make an international deal with a major French import company willing to place his unique American honeys throughout the European Union?”

I laughed. “I doubt Darla would hang up on them.”

Madame rose, went to her antique desk, and began rummaging through its drawers.

“Ah, here they are!”

With a look of triumph, Madame handed me a stack of vellum business cards, embossed in gold.
