Chapter 9

Game Day

Telling Emerson about his sister was the best thing Gavin could’ve done. Since then, he’d slept soundly and woken up feeling lighter and more hopeful, even when Charlie’s trail in Ohio ran cold. Whatever happened, however long this search took, as long as Gavin had someone to vent to, he didn’t feel like a ticking time bomb. Between the overwhelming sense of relief and Emerson’s comment about men not seeing past her body, he’d been thinking some pretty uncharacteristic thoughts. Like maybe sex shouldn’t be his main objective here. Maybe he should slow down and savor their time together. They were confusing and unpractical thoughts, considering she was only here for a few weeks. Worse, they were ill-timed—he was actually thinking about this shit in the middle of the clubhouse.

“Get your ass on the scale, pretty boy.”

Gavin startled at the sound of Marco’s voice. If nothing else came from the new look, the new nickname was much appreciated. Big guy had gotten old.

“It’s not Friday,” Gavin said, tossing his cleats into his locker.

“I know, you bailed on Friday.”

Gavin pulled his jersey over his head. “You were busy with minor-leaguers.”

“Never too busy for you. Let’s go.”

“Come on,” Gavin said, rolling his eyes. “I look good—on and off the field. I feel good, too. Who cares what the scale says?”

“I do.” Zee appeared behind Marco, right on cue. “Now get your ass on the scale.”

Okay, so maybe Gavin didn’t feel so light and hopeful now.

“I’ve been working out like crazy,” Gavin said, chatting nervously as they cut across the clubhouse. “And you’ve seen me on the field. You like what you see, right, Zee?”

“So far so good,” Zee said.

“You’re not out of the woods, yet,” Marco said, closing the door behind them once they were all inside the exam room. “What about that app? What about the food?”

“The app …” Gavin pressed his lips together and made a face. “I still say your app is shit.”

“So you’re not using it?” Marco asked.

“Come on, Sully.” Exasperation soaked Zee’s words.

“It’s all good. I’m eating better. I am.” In fact, he wasn’t eating much at all lately. He just didn’t have the urge to run through every drive-thru from here to the island.

“Numbers don’t lie,” Marco said, clearly unconvinced. “You’ll be a few ounces down because of the lack of hair,” he teased. “But you should’ve lost at least ten pounds.”

Gavin hesitated before he kicked off his sliders and stepped on the scale. He exhaled like he could blow out ten pounds of air.

Zee stood over his left shoulder. Marco stood on his right, fiddling with the counter weight.

Gavin couldn’t look. He didn’t know how to read the damn thing anyway.

“Nice,” Marco said. “Down thirteen.”

“Hot damn,” Zee said, and then he smacked Gavin on the ass. “Good work, Sully.”

Gavin perked up. Thirteen pounds. Hell, yeah. He raised his arm and held out a hand to Marco. “Hit me.”

Marco’s face was in his iPad. “Don’t tempt me. Imagine how much you would’ve lost if you’d been using the app.
