CHAPTER 15

“Find the retorta spell,” Sheba instructed.

“Wait.” Rufus took hold of my arm and dragged me from the book. “What are you doing?”

I stared up at him with fire in my eyes. At least I hoped there was fire in my eyes. It felt like there was, so it was probably true. “You aren’t putting yourself at risk.”

“Who says?”

“Me. I’m the one who got us into this mess, so I should be the one to get us out.”

“Clem.” Emotion filled his voice. “You can’t put yourself at risk.”

“I can and I will. You can’t. I felt the draw of those spells. You are worried. I’m worried, too.”

“At some point, though, I have to prove to myself that I can face the darkness and win.”

“You already have.” I took hold of his arm. “You have so many times when you’ve helped us—when you’ve helped me. How can you not see that?”

“I just…” He closed his eyes and dropped his head to his chest. “You’re right. Sometimes, when you’re on the inside looking out, it’s hard to see the truth.”

A wan smile flickered on my face. “Sometimes you have to hear the truth from another person. That’s how life is. That’s how this is. Let me do this.”

“Are you sure that you’re ready?”

No, I wasn’t sure. How could anyone be? But of course I didn’t say that. Instead I smiled. “I’m more than ready.”

Rufus pulled me to his chest, and I grabbed hold of him. I buried my nose in his shirt and inhaled the scent of him that lingered on his clothes—musk and clove.

After a long minute I released my hold, though I wanted to clutch him forever. “I’m ready.”

He gave a hard nod. “Then let’s go.”

As we walked back to Sheba, she grinned. “You two lovebirds get everything figured out?”

“We did,” I said proudly. “Now, lead me through the book.”

Rufus shot me a sad look, which I ignored as I placed my hands on the tome. The spells all shouted at me, tempting me to listen to them, to find them, to unleash their power on the planet. I would be lying if I said it was easy to ignore their calls. I felt like Odysseus, tied to his ship, listening as the sirens called to him, begging him to come to them.

But unlike Odysseus, I wasn’t tied back. I was in the book full force, doing my best to ignore the temptations around me.

Say me and you’ll live forever.

Chant my words and you’ll never be unhappy.

I promise a fruitful life.

Listen to me and your enemies will be vanquished.

Sheba’s voice barely broke through the surface of the others, but it did, though weakly. “Find the retorta curse. Find the spell and that’s when the real fun begins.”

Turning the pages was like lifting sheets of iron, they were so heavy. I knew it was from the weight of the curse on the book. Whoever used this tome was coaxed to say each and every spell, in order, to release the words trapped on the page.
