True Christian life is filled with true ministry. True ministry is the ascended Christ ministering to his people, building his church, and accomplishing his will.

Once, as I prayed just before I got up to speak, I remember feeling assured by God that his purpose would be accomplished. It’s hard to describe, but I had the sense that the work was already done before I even stood up. Since I was totally depending on God, the outcome was never in doubt. My hands were his hands; my feet were his feet. Those nail-scarred limbs still bleed on our behalf.

Mark ends his gospel with precisely this picture. Notice how he bases it on the ascension and the ongoing reign of Christ: “After the Lord Jesus had spoken to them, he was taken up into heaven and he sat at the right hand of God. Then the disciples went out and preached everywhere, and the Lord worked with them and confirmed his word by the signs that accompanied it” (Mark 16:19–20, emphasis added).

This is not a picture of a passive historical Jesus. It testifies to a reigning, ruling, active, dynamic Christ, still present today, still working today, using our hands and our feet to complete his task.
