Chapter 19

Everyone else retired straight back to their rooms after lunch. The vacation weekend had ended, and the disgruntled guests were just waiting for the all clear to leave. The house was quiet as we traipsed through in our winter gear. Our waterproof parkas and pants rustled as we tried to walk silently down the hallway and stairs. I was fairly certain that our mid-calf snow boots were going to be useless in the four foot deep snow, but it was the best we could do without a pair of snowshoes.

We walked past the hallway that led to the office. Kyle and Amy were talking about something. Kyle sounded agitated. It seemed to have to do with the disastrous weekend and how they would never recover their reputation. Sunni flinched as she heard the topic of their conversation. She wasn't going to leave the Dewdrop Inn enthusiastic about her own bed and breakfast. I was certain of that.

We crept through the kitchen unnoticed and walked out the back door. Kyle had shoveled the back stoop and part of the walkway, but once we left the solid cement path we were in snowville. Stupidly, I'd forgotten my sunglasses. Sunni adjusted hers and looked at me with a good dose of empathy as I squinted into the bright, white light reflected off the snowy landscape.

"We could share these," Sunni said. "I don't mean break them in half or anything, but I could use them for a few minutes, then hand them off to you."

"Thank you but no. I deserve this because I forgot to bring mine. And that was even after watching you grab those from your purse. I've never been in this much snow." I surveyed the area. "Besides, I think my eyes are adjusting. If we shared them we'd both spend our entire excursion adjusting between dark and light."

We'd been discussing the sunglasses as we forged a path through the snow. It came to mid-thigh on Sunni and she was a few inches taller. I was certain I'd be soaked through by the time we got back to the house, only, as we moved slowly through the white crystals it occurred to me I wasn't getting wet. The snow was sticking to me like powder.

"This is much better snow than we get near the coast," I said. "We don't get more than a few inches at a time, but it's always heavy with moisture, salty moisture to be more precise."

"Our snow is much more slushy and wet too." Sunni ran her hand through the pristine white flakes. It clung to her gloves, turning them white. "This is far more pleasant. I don't think this should be too bad after all. Although, I do feel some of it climbing over the tops of my boots, so I'm sure our socks will be wet by the time we're done. Which brings me to something else—where should we start?"

"I don't think anyone could have buried a body in this weather. I say we head to the two outbuildings.
