FOURTEEN

Gunfire.

The staccato of muzzle flash, like fireflies blinking in the darkness. He could see them without having to strain his eyes, but knowing the exact details was another matter. He knew some of it, though.

Ghouls, for one.

He’d found their tracks a few kilometers back in the form of trampled grass and they had led him across the open field toward a small stream. They were moving fast and didn’t have a clue he was behind them, and didn’t care about hiding their presence. At least, none of them turned around and attacked if they did. Or maybe a camp full of people was the better option.

Either way, he got within two hundred or so meters of the campground when the shooting began. There was just the boom! of a shotgun blast at first, but that quickly gave way to handguns and semiautomatic rifles. That must not have been very effective (No silver bullets?), because the gunfire stopped and was replaced by hand-to-hand fighting.

Silver-bladed weapons. Apparently, the campers weren’t smart enough to carry silver bullets on them but were smart enough to have silver knives available.

One out of two ain’t bad, I guess.

Keo couldn’t see everything that happened. He didn’t have field glasses on him and was stuck with the very stingy moonlight to eyeball everything with. Not that the fighting lasted for very long. That was one of the advantages of having silver on you at all times; ghouls went down like stones once you pricked them with the precious metal. The Ka-Bar in the sheath wedged behind Keo’s back now was similarly coated. He’d been sure to ask George all about it the first time he saw the knife on the boat.

He couldn’t tell who was who in the campgrounds or which figure was human and which was ghoul. It didn’t help that the group hadn’t lit any fires before they bedded down for the night; they were probably hoping not to attract attention.

Better luck next time, guys.

He was most worried about Lara. She was in that camp, too, along with those very heavily armed men led by Owen, a.k.a. Mr. Piss Down Your Throat. Keo thought there were fewer people when the fighting finally finished, but he couldn’t be sure of the exact number. What he wouldn’t give for a pair of night-vision binoculars…

After a lengthy period of staring, letting his eyes adjust to the darkness, Keo could finally make out the two trailers parked next to each other on one side of the camp. The horses that had been pulling them were corralled on the opposite side, and the animals had kicked up one hell of a ruckus when the ghouls attacked. But Owen’s crew had managed to keep them from running off, and despite all the noise, there was no second wave of nightcrawlers.

That last part made him feel better. You never knew how many of the creatures were still out there right now. Six or seven months ago, he might have said “not many” with some measure of confidence, but that was before Merrick.
