I was happy to see that Gabrielle seemed much better, once again the picture of health. The original Gabrielle answered the door, appearing rested and calm. She still looked like she was going to give birth any second now, but Iâd have to take her word for it that she still had a month to go to see the newest little Lemaire.
We went into the kitchen once again, and I set the laptop on the table. âWorking from home is the latest trend,â I said with a smile. âI hope youâre not worrying about the resort. With most of the guests mid-way through their stay, itâs pretty quiet. Everyone seems very happy to just eat, drink and sunbathe. If you do all the ordering, just like usual, Iâll check things when they arrive and leave you some notes and all the paperwork. I hope youâve been able to put your feet up and relax a bit.â
âYes, for sure. I do feel 100% better than the other day. Although it seems longer ago than that. Almost like a dream. Or a nightmare that Iâll be able to wake up from.â
She shook her head and looked down at her lap, well, her enormous belly, but didnât reach up to wipe away any tears. She seemed to be over the worst of her emotional reaction to the death of Guy.
âAnything I need to know for the next couple of days?â I asked. I was anxious to get in a few crime-related questions, but I didnât want to appear ghoulish.
âNo, it should be fine. These are regular suppliers, and they know the routine, and the staff are all great. They know what to do. Some of the people, Iâll phone, and others, itâs just online. Either way, the laptop is helpful, so thanks for bringing it.â Gabrielle stood up and poured us both a glass of iced tea. Once she sat back down, she sighed and said, âJanelle stopped by. Twice.â
OK then. I was happy Gabrielle herself had raised the topic. âHow did that go? Iâm sure everything is fine.â
She shrugged. âI think she believed me. Itâs all so weird. I must have just got into the car to drive home when he started down the trail. Iâm surprised I didnât see him.â
That got me thinking. I wondered if maybe he hadnât been coming straight from the resort. The path to the Perroquet cottages led off the main trail. If heâd been down there, or inside any of the cabanes, no one would have seen him as they strolled back up from the beach to the Pavilion for dinner. But I was sure Janelle would have thought of that. I hated to admit it but her reaction to my buried treasure theory had sort of stopped me in my tracks. I mean not even a brief conversation. She could have at least faked some interest. But I guess thatâs not how you get to be a police chief.
I decided since Gabrielle didnât seem too upset talking about the situation, Iâd prompt her for more information.
