I tried calling Eli several times but he didn’t answer his phone. When Meghan hung up on her call, we both started to speak at once. I motioned for her to go first.

“My client wants me up in Napa early tomorrow morning.” Meghan looked annoyed.

“To do what?”

“His lawyer wants another practice session.” Meghan had picked up a client who needed an environmental consultant for an upcoming trial. It wasn’t a long-term assignment, but court cases paid especially well. That helped make up for the demanding aspect of the job.

“Too bad tomorrow isn’t Friday and we could make a weekend of it.”

“Sure. You, me, and that lawyer. Very romantic.” But she flashed a smile at me. “I’ll be pretty busy working anyway. He said it was only for the day so I should be back by tomorrow evening.” She paused and tilted her head. “What did you want to tell me?”

I explained Eli’s status.

“Oh, I hope he’s okay,” she said, and then chuckled. “Triple A card?”

“Yeah and the emergency room for a sprained knee. Can’t wait to see the bill. I’m trying to reach him again but he’s not answering. I didn’t even know he was going skiing, and it’s the middle of the week.”

We reached her house where I kissed her goodbye and took a Rover car back to my place. I spent the trip talking to Eli and then called Amanda to wish her luck on her test. Brody, Juan, Gabriela, Sofia Lopez, and the rest of them would have to wait for the morning.
