Oral Traditions

Researchers often overlook the wealth of information held by people who have lived for many years in or near a historic property. Much can be gained by asking property owners, tenants, and neighbors for information. Sometimes the best way is simply to ask them to tell the stories they know about the place, who lived there, and what happened there. Building caretakers and contractors may also provide useful information regarding techniques of original construction or changes made over time. Their information may provide a historical context for construction methods appropriate to a period and help establish when work was completed. Their description may shed light on the significance of craftsmanship techniques found at a property and give weight to arguments for a property’s designation. Good guides for conducting oral histories can be found in the local library or on the Internet. It is not as easy as it may seem to interview one of these “experts,” so time spent preparing for an interview is time well spent.
