I didn’t get a chance to look for a curse-breaking spell for rats in my grimoire because I realized I needed to chew Detective Palmer up one side and down the other first.

“You knew, didn’t you?” I told him later on my cell. “You knew Cass was related to RaeRae. That’s why you didn’t want me to go to Bedlam County. Why didn’t you tell me?”

His long sigh over the line practically blew me over. “I didn’t know. I suspected. I confirmed it when I found out the last name of the three brothers of Three Brothers’ Funeral Home. It’s Rudio, in case that wasn’t obvious by now. I also found out the owner of Red Bedlam Bed & Breakfast is named RaeRae Rudio. An employee there confirmed that Cass, RaeRae, and the three brothers are siblings.”

“Detective, you asked for my help.” I followed after Studmuffin who was trotting over to The Place To Put Things I Don’t Want To Think About Today. “The least you can do is be honest with me."

Silence.

Studmuffin hopped up on the kitchen table and fanned the pages of my application with his paw. He gave me serious side-eye as he did so.

Yeah, yeah, message received. I rolled my eyes at him. "Detective?"

"I'm here."

"Are you going to be honest with me or not?"

"You're not going to like it if I am."

"Well, it's better than saying nothing at all. Go on. Try me."

The detective blew out a weary-sounding breath. "Early this morning, the police station received a call from the Step Back Inn with reports of strange noises coming from inside one of the motel rooms."

"Okay..."

"Coming from inside Cass's room. That's where she's staying."

My familiar spied my half-full cup of coffee I’d set on the table that morning. While watching me carefully, he tap-tap-tapped it closer to my application.

Such a fluffer-stinker! I glared down my nose at him as I scooped the mug off the table and poured the remnants into the sink.

"What kind of strange noises?" I asked the detective.

"Thumping. Thudding. The clerk said it sounded like someone was building a robot."

I sat in the chair in front of my laptop. I’d set it there the previous night to compare the college’s online application with the paper one, something I should’ve done before starting. Two ears poked up from behind the laptop, along with a yellow-green-eyed warning glare. "The cleaning kind or the dystopian future kind of robot?"

"I don’t know. I didn’t ask."

"Rookie mistake, Detective,” I teased. “When it comes to robots, that’s the first question that should be asked. Always.”

Studmuffin nodded. “This is known,” he whispered.

“Um…noted…” the detective said. “Anyway, the clerk checked the room, didn’t find anything, and that’s when he called the police.”

“And?”

“They didn’t find anything either.”

“Okay, I think I know what you’re implying by telling me this,” I said. “But you seem to have forgotten that Cass turned into a rat. Someone else must've checked into her room."

"No, no one else checked into her room.” Detective Palmer tapped a pen or something in a nervous beat.
