Chapter Fourteen

Colin

Watching Arnaud dance was like seeing art come to life and it never failed to affect him. No matter how many hours he spent in studios, audition halls, and audiences, he was awed every time. Even after he went to prison, he dreamed about the grace and beauty that was Arnaud in motion. Despite being blindsided this morning, all the same feelings were right there and he’d willingly let them take over.

Of course, it couldn’t have been as easy as just letting the emotions in. Owen would have happily hung around in the background until they remembered him, but the couple peeking in from the small porch wouldn’t be so accommodating. What had once been a smooth ride, now felt like a roller coaster, and he wasn’t sure he had the stomach for all the twists and turns.

“Don’t even think about running, brother,” Owen hissed as he came to stand beside him. Without really knowing what was to come, his friend stood firmly in his corner. As long as he wasn’t fighting for himself, Owen would be a formidable opponent. Hopefully, it wouldn’t come to that, but it was nice to have him there.

“I honestly wasn’t.” At least not more than he normally did. “You know this isn’t going to be pretty?”

“So it appears.” Owen just shrugged and nudged his chin toward the windows.

Colin saw Arnaud in a heated discussion with his parents, hands were flying and words were definitely being hurled. It wasn’t ego that made him believe he was the reason and he hated being the cause of their discontent. Still, as much as he didn’t want a confrontation, he sincerely hoped Francis and Aileen stayed. Having the support of his family had always meant so much to Arnaud and Colin didn’t think that changed.

“You should do all the talking.” Maybe it was cowardly, but Colin didn’t think it wise to call attention to himself.

“No, you should show them what a kick ass contractor you are,” Owen whispered when the door opened and all three Dechenes stepped in. “Brace yourself.”

Colin didn’t think there was anything he could do to brace for this moment, but he stood his ground. Arnaud had forgiven him and his friends had accepted him, so even though he hadn’t been able to do either for himself, he was bolstered by their belief in him.

Arnaud’s stride was confident as he led the way across the room and his eyes begged them to meet him halfway. The request for a show of solidarity wasn’t one Colin could ignore and he was again grateful to have Owen in step beside him.

“So, this turned into a party and a half, huh?” Arnaud teased as they came to a stop in the center of the room. He reached a hand out toward Owen politely and said, “I’m sorry, we haven’t been introduced.”

“Owen Connor, this is Arnaud Dechene. Apparently, he’s the owner of Step Softly.” Arnaud just grinned unapologetically and Colin shook his head. The man was certifiable. “And his parents, Francis and Aileen.
