A place or feeling of belonging. I took in a deep breath and allowed myself to bask in the fresh air from the Milliken hills. According to Cheta, the hills were about one hundred feet above sea level. Weâd just finished a very romantic dinner in one of Enuguâs high end restaurants. In the past four days since weâd been in Enugu, weâd had one big meal with the family, but had gone out to eat every night since then.
It had been three days since the run-in with his sisters and everything had been quite calm since then. That day, before we could even leave the estate good, a livid Cheta was calling my phone. I wondered how he knew, but Ifunanya later told me that the domestic staff mustâve snitched. After getting him to calm it down, we continued with our day.
At the tailorâs, Ifunanya assisted me in picking out two traditional styles. She then briefly video called Jasmine for approval to make some changes to her own dress. Once we left there, we headed to Kalu International Inc. After obtaining her masters in England, Ifunanya moved back home to work for the family. She gave me a tour of the massive grounds and what I saw was like nothing I couldâve imagined.
The structure was the equivalent of a Fortune 500 company in the United States. The organization consisted of three, ten-story buildings, one for each pillar of the business. Each of the older Kalu men ran a division. The place was complete with a cafeteria, gym, staff and executive offices, library, and training spaces. The warehouses and factories were on another side of town, but we ran out of time before having to meet Jidenna and Cheta for an early dinner.
Since then, Cheta and I had spent almost every moment together. Weâd visit with the family a little, then weâd be off to see the town. Golfing, forest tours, cave excursions or chilling by what was called the sand beach. There was something different every day, but the day always ended with food. Cheta was committed to taking me to a different restaurant every night. The cuisine varied from foods I could find in America to local dishes. It was awesome. Obviously, I liked some more than others, but what I hadnât been able to get used to was the amount of spice used in preparing the local dishes.
Currently, instead of heading back to the estate, Cheta decided to take me on a ride. I was enjoying the scenic view of the town. The vibes in the car were chill and conversation great as we enjoyed some mellow tunes. I was totally atâ¦home.
Until I realized he was driving up this winding road. The road was like those freakishly dangerous roads in those Fast & Furious movies. The meandering terrain and deep gullies made me feel like I was on a natural rollercoaster. No matter how many times he told me to relax, my heart was in my throat until we got to the top.
