Chapter

Hannah didn’t have the energy to protest as Kane carried her to his truck. Kane sat her in the passenger seat and reached across her to snap the seat belt. To further add to her humiliation, her stomach growled.

“When was the last time you ate Hannah?” Kane asked. She heard the gruff tone. He was angry again. She definitely brought out the worst in him.

“I’m fine. I’m sorry you have to do this again.” She apologized.

“You didn’t answer my question.” Kane growled. He watched as she bit down on her lip.

“This morning. It was a little after ten, I think.” She answered.

“It’s midnight Hannah. Why didn’t you ask for something?” Kane scolded her.

“I…I…” Kane didn’t wait for her to finish. He slammed her door shut and stalked around to the driver side. He sent a text before he opened his door. Hannah was exhausted, all she wanted was sleep. Her face burned with embarrassment. She may be exhausted, but she refused to be a burden to anyone. She fumbled as she unbuckled her seat belt. This weakness was so overwhelming. She tried to open the truck door, but Kane was there on his side.

“What are you doing?” He growled.

Hannah unleashed all the pent up anger, frustration and hurt on him. “I have apologized to you over and over. I didn’t ask you to do this. I didn’t ask you to come to Muncie. I didn’t ask you to risk your life in that lake. Honestly, I wish you had let me sink. I’m miserable now. Let me out of this damned truck! Andrew may still be here. I will pay him to take me ANYWHERE but here.” Hannah was shaking all over. Her hand fell away from the door handle. She couldn’t lift either hand to wipe her tears. The outburst had drained what little energy she had left.

Without a word, Kane reached across her and pulled the seatbelt back around her body. He started the truck and pulled away from the marina.

They drove into town in silence. He pulled in the parking lot of a twenty four hour restaurant. He left the truck running and stalked into the restaurant leaving Hannah sitting. She didn’t realize she had so many tears. All she could do was sit there and cry. She sobbed while he was gone. Her head hurt desperately. She wished she could unbuckle her seat belt. She hated her life now. She hated not having control. She had pushed her injured body to the limit. She laid her head back on the seat and closed her eyes. The tears wouldn’t stop. The truck door opened. She tried to raise her head and couldn’t. She opened her eyes. Kane had several large bags of food. He settled them in the back seat. The smell made her stomach rumble. They again rode in silence until he pulled into the parking area of Haley’s apartment. He surveyed the darkness around them. Just as he did after he picked her up in Muncie, when they stopped at the hotel.
