“Do you ever feel like the world is trying to tell you something?” I asked at girls’ night that weekend.

I’d been trying to understand why everyone in my life seemed to be saying the same things, and the only thing I could come up with was I was supposed to listen. I just didn’t know why.

“All the time,” Blake said. “I usually ignore it and regret it, but yeah, I’ve been there.”

“Me, too,” Karissa said. “But I listen. Working alone, I don’t have other people to bounce ideas off of. It’s not always easy, so I have to trust that when I get a signal from somewhere, it’s for a reason.”

“Are we talking about Colin?” Finley asked.

Everyone turned to her, then looked at me.

“She and Colin had dinner the other night. When we met at O’Kelley’s?” She looked at Karissa for confirmation. “She and Colin were there together.”

“Good for you,” Trinity said. “He’s cute. And yes, you should totally date him. Or keep dating him.”

“My neighbor told me I should be open to love. She said she knows all about Andy and wants me to be happy. And you guys keep pushing me toward Colin. And Colin…”

“You like him,” Laura provided.

I nodded. “I do, I guess.”

“You guess?” Karissa said.

I shrugged. “I do, but…”

“You don’t want to,” Finley said.

I nodded.

“Is this about Andy or Colin?” Laura asked.

“It’s not about them,” Melody said. “It’s about her. It’s about Elise trusting herself. She believed in Andy once, and he ruined that. She doesn’t know if she can trust her opinions about men anymore.”

Everyone looked at me to confirm Melody’s assumption. She was dead-on. I nodded.

“If she was so wrong about Andy, how does she know she isn’t wrong about Colin? Or the next guy? It’s about learning to trust herself and listen to herself again. And that’s not easy,” Melody said.

“You sound like you know,” Finley said.

Melody nodded. “I do. Because that’s what my sister did to me. Not to the same extent, obviously, but she twisted everything for her own good and ruined what we had. Willow shut me down whenever I tried to have an opinion and blamed Ramsey for trying to change my mind all to try to split us up. When she finally admitted what she was doing, I felt broken for trusting my own sister. How do you not trust your sister?”

“Wow,” Finley breathed. “I didn’t know it was that bad.”

Melody nodded. “It was, and it still is, but I have Ramsey. Ramsey shows me every day that love is still a possibility. He tells me he loves me. Elise doesn’t have that. Elise faced the same betrayal, but she faced it from the person who was supposed to show her what love is.”

“And letting go of that pain and trying again isn’t easy,” Laura said. “I’m sorry I’ve joked about this, Elise. I didn’t realize how hard it was for you.”

I shrugged. “Thanks. It’s…I have the gift of time. It’s been years since I left Andy. I’m
