Chapter Nine

As a general rule, Emily did not get nervous. Anxiety and worry could be productive, if they drove her to take corrective action and right wrongs. And she had long since lost any sense of shame that would lead to embarrassment.

But as she watched the street from her office window, waiting for a glimpse of the imposing figure of Hank O’Shea to appear, she had to admit that she was nervous about this entire situation. She now had five people in this house who did not belong here. One she could hide successfully. Two she could hide reasonably well. But five? She shook her head.

Every minute Dolly and Cyrus were in this house was another minute all of their lives were at risk. Oh, how she longed for some mode of transportation that could get Dolly and Cyrus to Virginia City in a matter of days—hours, even. The trip by train would take weeks at best. Every stop would be another chance for Cyrus to change his mind and catch another train back to Brimstone.

Every stop would be a chance to hold him in her arms again. She shuddered, still able to feel the ghost of his fingers and his cock inside of her.

Her husband, God rest his soul, had not been good in bed. With her years of experience, she wondered what their love life would’ve been like if he’d been honest with what he wanted. Looking back, she now suspected that he was the kind of man who would’ve enjoyed being bound and whipped. Many did. But no, that wasn’t how a man of the cloth should carry on with his wife in the biblical sense, so instead they’d just had three miserable years of boring sex before he’d gotten himself killed.

Since then, she’d a great many lovers and a good many orgasms worth remembering. But they all paled in comparison to the release that Cyrus had unleashed upon her. Because with him, it wasn’t just the physical act. It wasn’t just about pleasure and satisfaction.

In her time, she’d scoffed at the concept of “making love” with another human. Love was an unknowable, unreachable ideal used to trap women into loveless marriages and other equally dire circumstances and she had been careful never to fall for it.

But for the first time, last night and then this morning, she had made love with a man. And it changed everything.

How was she supposed to send him away? She couldn’t. But he couldn’t stay with her, either.

Oh, what a mess this was.

Finally, she saw Hank O’Shea’s broad figure strolling down the street. As best Emily could tell, Hank was a permanent third in the marriage of the former mayor of Brimstone, Raymond Dupree, and the woman once known as Miss Emerald Green—now Mrs. Emmeline Dupree.

Emmeline was supposed to have taken over the Jeweled Ladies when Mistress retired, although when that was supposed to happen had never been clearly defined. Perhaps that was part of Emily’s worry. She’d had a succession plan and now she didn’t.
