TWELVE

Jack wasn’t sure he’d heard right. Their first kiss? Was that what this had all been about—Pete telling him the full, horrible story of his ex? The fact that he’d dressed in something besides black? Pete had been working up to a kiss?

He pushed his glass away decisively. “I’m not drunk.”

“Me either,” Pete said, then he looked down as if he was embarrassed to have said anything. Jack thought he was adorable.

But he was also worried that Pete was going to do something he’d later regret. Now he knew the extent to which Kurt had screwed Pete over, it made him even more determined to be someone who put Pete first, always.

“Are you sure that’s what you want?” He had to be certain.

Pete raised his head. His beautiful eyes sparkled in the light from the intimate little wall lamp at the end of the booth. “I wanted to kiss you the first time I laid eyes on you.”

Wow. Jack swallowed, suddenly nervous. Pete wasn’t fucking around. This was real. He was acutely aware this might be the last first kiss he’d ever have. His palms suddenly went sweaty and he strongly wanted another taste of his margarita.

But Pete wanted them sober.

Instead of saying anything, he got up, pivoted around the end of the table, and sat down next to Pete on his side of the booth. Pete didn’t have time to move; it was a tight fit. Jack could feel him, warm and solid against the length of his side. He took one of Pete’s hands in both of his, lowering them below the table. Nobody in the barely half-full bar was paying them any attention, but he wanted this moment to be for them alone.

“I just want you to know,” he said, almost conversationally, even though this felt like the most important conversation he’d ever had, “that I really like you, Pete. I think you’re so talented, and brave, and hardworking, and clever, and kind. And I promise I’m not going to do anything to make you regret kissing me.”

Pete looked down at their joined hands. He let out a shaky breath, then he looked right at Jack.

“I believe you.”

That simple expression of faith made Jack happier than having written a dozen bestsellers. Pete should be able to believe in people, to believe in himself. If Jack had anything to do with getting him to believe, he was happy.

“So we’re doing this?”

“Define ‘this,’” Pete said with a quirk of his sexy mouth.

“God, this is whatever you want, Pete. Whatever you’ll let me have. Because I want—” He stopped, licked his lips. Pete seemed to like it when he did that. “I want quite a lot. As much as you’ll let me have.”

Pete seemed to give the parameters of what they were about to embark on serious thought. “Let’s take it slow, okay? I’d say quite a lot is on the table, but not all at once. If that makes sense?”

“Yes, sure. Sounds great.” Jack would have agreed to almost anything at that point.
