I took Miranda’s efforts to heart and gathered my things, including my again-snoozing familiar, and climbed the stairs up to my apartment. I needed to create an investigation board to track my information, or, at that point, Miranda’s information.

Once there, the gleam of my whiteboard from the sun’s glow through my window felt like a beacon of hope. With a fresh stack of colorful sticky notes in hand, I set to work establishing my investigation board for Edgar’s murder.

On the top, a stark white sticky note bore his name in bold, underlined letters—our unfortunate victim. Below that, I arranged other notes, each a different color representing a suspect. I methodically placed them in a semicircle around Edgar’s, like a dark constellation of potential culprits in a twisted galaxy.

Dorian’s note was blue and stuck slightly apart from the rest. I’d paid her bail, and despite her arrest, my gut screamed that she was an unlikely murderer. We hadn’t spoken much, and I needed more details to understand her movements on that fateful day.

Rejection linked Lilith to Edgar and was more biting than what I could have imagined. Her motive simmered with desperation and hurt, a dangerous cocktail for a desperate, possibly unstable, magical.

Seraphina’s note was pink, and the newest addition, highlighted by recent whispers of a heated argument with Edgar. Her high-society veneer could have concealed darker depths, but I had to be careful. My disdain for the witch wasn’t a reason to assume guilt, so to be fair, I had to push my personal feelings aside and focus on the facts.

Lastly, Gregor, on a yellow note, was still a question mark in my head, though Miranda’s sneaky snooping revelations did cause me alarm. His recent strange behavior and proximity to Edgar warranted attention.

Cooper jumped onto my coffee table, his tail sweeping across the old wood. “Planning to interrogate the sticky notes, or are you going to actually talk to these people?”

“Both,” I replied, smirking at his snark. “The board helps me visualize the connections, see the gaps. First, I’ll talk to Dorian. I need the full story. Gabe’s not telling me everything.”

“No, really?”

“He can’t always give me all the details. I know that, but this time, I feel like there might be something important he’s leaving out.”

“If that’s the case, do you really think Dorian will tell you?”

“I dropped fifty k for her bail. If I have to, I’ll cast a truth spell over her.”

“You should do that with them all. That could be entertaining.”

“Strong magicals know when they’re under a spell,” I said.

“Which means Dorian might as well.”

“If she’s strong enough, probably, but I’m willing to take the risk on her.”

Cooper’s eyes narrowed. “Who’s next? Lilith with her potion problems? Or Seraphina and her secret spats?”

“Lilith first. Her emotional motive is strong, and if emotions were magic, hers might be powerful enough to kill,” I mused, tapping her note. “As for Seraphina, she’s a puzzle. High and mighty, sure, but a killer?”

“You’d be surprised what high heels and high attitudes can hide,” Cooper quipped, his whiskers twitching.
