Kors CEO Idol was already leading Kors to the masses by beefing up Michael by Michael Kors, his midtier label, and introducing shoes, handbags, sunglasses, and watches, effectively lowering his prices with the addition of all those $200 handbags and watches and $100 shoes. Kors rolled out hundreds of in-store shops across Macy’s starting in 2003, as well as three hundred freestanding Kors boutiques, which the company would open around the world by 2013.

To sell on that large a scale, it was more important than ever for Kors to become a celebrity. And the path to get there had already been blazed by the king of America’s celebrity designers—his contemporary, Isaac Mizrahi.
