True to form, Bebe took us to the mall. She’s actually kind of fun to shop with, because she gets in these moods where she just wants to spend money. I remember one whirlwind trip when she whipped out her credit card and bought fourteen—count ’em, fourteen—pairs of shoes at Neiman Marcus. She was like a woman possessed. The day-after-Thanksgiving holiday sales? She’s a demon shopper.

That night, however, Bebe was depressed.

“What’s wrong, Mom?” Mina asked as we pulled into a parking spot at the mall.

She sighed.

“What?” Mina asked again.

“All right, you might as well know. I got the invitation to my twenty-year college reunion. I just want to throw up. I feel old.” She pulled down her visor to look in the little mirror. “I look old.”

“Mom, that’s ridiculous. You look our age, for God’s sake. Get over yourself.”

“I need a makeover.”

“A makeover?” I asked. “Bebe, you’re gorgeous. How could they possibly fix you?”

“Well, a little collagen, a little Botox. And I’m getting all new makeup tonight. Youthful. Come on, girls.”

We followed her into the mall and left her at the makeup counter. The salesgirl must have felt like she hit the jackpot, because Bebe sat in one of the tall makeup counter stools and said, “I want one of everything. And fast.”

“We’re going to find Lucy a dress, okay, Mom?”

“Sure.” Bebe waved her hand, her long, manicured nails polished to perfection. “Meet you near the food court in two hours.”

Mina and I left the makeup counter and went into the main part of the mall. As we walked Mina started rubbing her arms.

“What’s up?”

“I’m cold.”

“Want my jacket?” I had on a flannel-lined jean jacket, with a black turtleneck.

“Yeah.” Mina had on two sweaters already.

“Maybe you’re coming down with something.”

“I don’t know.”

We walked some more and spotted a really adorable dress in the window of a shop. We walked over to it, and Mina rubbed her right temple.

“What?” I asked her.

“I wish I knew. I just feel like I’m coming down with something.”

I looked at the dress in the window, and from the reflection in the store glass I could see two guys behind us. I squinted. They looked awfully familiar. I grabbed Mina’s hand and pulled her into the store. I forced her to duck behind a rack of clothes with me.

“What?” she snapped.

I peered over the top of the clothes rack—a very nice selection of cashmere, I might add.

“I knew it,” I whispered.

“Knew what?”

“Over there.” I jerked my head.

Standing out in the mall area were Jude and Seth. And Seth, for one, seemed entirely too interested in my best friend, Mina.

“Crap . . . ,” I muttered. “Cosmo Girl doesn’t have a quiz to handle this situation.”

Sure. I could just imagine. “Toxic Boyfriends and Their Vampire Families: How to Tell When Enough Is Enough.”
