âReally donât want you here, Miss Wright.â
Constable Tom Cartsome was in rare form today, repeatedly tugging the collar of his starched shirt straight and running a hand over the crunchy ends of his spritzed-stiff hairdo. Hair that was normally a mousy brown was now nearly black with whatever was holding it in place. Obviously the man knew the murder of a well-known entertainment figure like Hannah Brady was going to draw news and he was looking to be a part of it. Dressed to the nines and ready for his close-up.
But first, he was taking Molly back through the station to see Opal in one of the holding cells. He was less than enthused about it.
âYouâll have five minutes with her,â he said gruffly. âNot a tick more. Weâre watching on the monitors and anything you say may be used against your friend. Hear me?â
âLoud and clear,â Molly grumbled. She was willing to put up with anything he had to say if it meant getting to see Opal. He could have told her sheâd have to sing Steve Bloomerâs Watching and she would have gladly belted out the Rams fighting song while wearing pompoms and face paint, so long as it got her here.
The three holding cells at the back of the station were all empty except the one on the left, where Opal Jennings sat behind the bars. It was very different back here than what Molly might have expected from watching police procedural shows on television. It was clean and bright rather than dingy and dark. The bench that Opal was hunched on didnât exactly look comfortable but there was a pillow and a blanket and a low divider of cinderblocks on the other side allowed her a little bit of privacy when she was using the loo.
It might not be a total nightmare but Molly could not stand seeing one of her former students locked away like this.
âFive minutes,â Cartsome repeated as if she might have forgotten. âRemember, weâll be watching.â
He pointed to the black bubble of a security camera on the ceiling and then he walked back down the hallway to the security door and closed it behind him.
Opal sprang up from the bench when she heard the noise. âMolly! Oh, I canât believe you came.â
Tears moistened her eyes as she reached out through the bars to take Mollyâs hand. In one of the bigger towns this sort of contact would probably be prohibited by dozens of different regulations. Thankfully, this was Little Clegghorn where human decency still trumped rigid adherence to the rules.
Either that, or Constable Cartsome and the others were hoping Opal would say something to Molly to incriminate herself. Whichever it was, Molly was just glad she could let Opal know she hadnât been forgotten.
âI came as soon as I could,â Molly told her. âI havenât given up on you. In fact Iâve been doing some snooping around. Turns out this Hannah Brady wasnât the wonderful human being that all of Europe thought she was.
