Chapter 13

The Futura building was only six minutes from Sayler’s Old Country Kitchen, which was a favorite of mine because of the delicious steaks. Often when people discovered I was into herbs, healthy food, and alternate medicines, they were surprised when they learned I wasn’t a vegetarian. Maybe it was the no-shoes, flower-child image that gave them a certain idea of me. But I loved steak and just about every other meat as well.

I ordered an eighteen-ounce New York steak with the full meal. It set me back nearly forty bucks and was a luxury I could ill afford, but I was drooping. If I was to get through the meeting with the football players at the school, I had to be alert. That meant I was keeping my gloves on for now, so I didn’t have to read any imprints, casual or otherwise.

As I waited for the food, I removed one glove long enough to write an email on my phone to Elliot, highlighting everything I’d learned and what information I needed him to research. I also snapped pictures of the employee and investor records and sent them as well. I sent a copy of the email to Shannon, Quincy, and Paige, asking for any updates. I hoped someone had new information because I hadn’t made much progress, except maybe clearing Titus Grey and learning more about Robby Hartford.

As I ate, I considered what I’d learned and what I still needed to find out. Would Futura have had enough money to launch without Peter’s death? With the new investors, I thought it likely. So that meant Stevan and Titus wouldn’t have motive. But how much had Stevan known about his father’s will? He had the largest number voting shares now, and that could be important.

Or had Robby Hartford stolen more than he admitted to? And why did he need the money?

Was there a connection between Arthur and Niklas? Since Niklas hadn’t inherited any part of Futura, he seemed the least likely at the moment to have wanted his father dead. Except the imprint on his ring said he had something to hide. But if he’d killed his father, why bring in the attorney, who would put a spotlight on the death?

There was also Brigit Griffin and her chocolate making. Did she have access to tadalafil? Could she have put it in the chocolate she’d made for her husband? If she had, how had the nitroglycerin ended up in his system? That made me wonder if two people were involved, with two separate agendas that might or might not have included plans for murder. I didn’t believe Brigit’s imprints at the hospital had been those of a woman trying to kill her husband.

After inhaling all of my rather large meal in less than ten minutes, to the utter shock of the waitress, I started on my way to Franklin High School. If traffic didn’t hold me up, I’d get there by one, which would give me time to observe the kids as they arrived.
