Bryan stepped gratefully through the doorway and dropped his arm to take a deep breath of the fresh air inside the shop. And promptly heaved. He clapped a hand over his mouth and nose, swallowing frantically to keep everything down. What the hell? It smelled even worse in here.

“Max. What brings you to my fine establishment?”

“Hank.”

Bryan squinted at the old man approaching and knew he’d found the source of the smell. Hank’s dirt encrusted overalls hung on his wiry frame by one button and looked to have at least a year’s worth of food and other mysterious substances smeared on them. His long, greasy hair was matched by an equally dirty beard that reached halfway to his navel. When Hank scratched his armpit before holding out a black-stained hand to him, Bryan quickly shoved his own into his pockets.

“That’s mighty rude of you disrespecting a man in his own place of business.” Yellowed eyes glared balefully at Bryan.

“Sorry. I don’t mean to be rude. It’s just that…uh…I have a slight skin infection.” Bryan grimaced. “Very contagious.”

Hank yanked his hand back in horror and took a step back. “You stay by the door. Or better yet, go outside. There’s no telling what other filthy diseases you’ve brought into my place.” He grabbed at his neck. “I think I might be coming down with something. Max, are my glands swollen?” He opened his cavernous mouth, exposing his brown, rotted teeth. Bryan held his breath thankful he wasn’t any closer to the rancid smell coming out of it.

Max’s eyelid twitched. Bryan held back a smile when he stepped back. “You know there’s nothing wrong with you. When you’re done messing around, we have some business to discuss with you.”

Hank cackled. “Why didn’t you say so? Let’s go to my office and talk.” He pointed a dirt encrusted fingernail at Bryan. “Not you though. You stay right there. And don’t touch anything. You’ve got a shady look about you.”

Bryan’s eyebrows went up. He looked shady? Then he thought about being trapped in a room with Hank and nodded. “I won’t move from this spot.”

“See that you don’t.” Hank wove his way through the boxes strewn over the floor and shelves filled with assorted junk until he reached a piece of rotted material nailed to the door frame. Pushing it to the side, he gestured Max through and glared at Bryan as if making sure he hadn’t moved any further into the shop. Bryan shuddered at the thought.
