Chapter 19

Jocelyn was pacing up and down the library. She jumped a bit as I opened the door.

“Mom, you scared me,” she said as her hand flew up to her chest.

“Sorry. I was just coming in to check on everything in the castle before bed. Is everything okay?”

She nodded, but she looked very anxious about something. “Yeah. Everything is fine.” I walked into the room to talk to her. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw some of the materials I had left behind when I was crafting the potion for Mrs. Anderson.

Oh, shoot. How could I be so careless?

I let my eyes slide off of it and looked back at Jocelyn, trying not to draw too much attention to it.

“I can tell everything isn’t fine. And why would it be? It’s been a pretty bad visit so far,” I said, giving her a hug.

She hugged me back and sighed. “I’m sorry. I wanted it to be like old times. Like Jamie not partying and stuff and the three of us just hanging out. Why couldn’t it just be like that?”

“Sometimes we don’t always get what we want. That’s okay. Things will work out in the end. And I promise that I’ll convince that sister of yours on our next visit to hang out with us for a whole day. We’ll stay in our jammies and eat ice cream and watch movies. It’ll be great.”

Jocelyn smiled a bit and hugged me tighter. “Yeah. That does sound nice.”

She hesitated for a moment before continuing. “Mom, what really happened to Mrs. A?”

My eyebrows shot up and I took a step back. I tried not to look guilty and tip her off that there was something more going on.

“What do you mean? She had an allergic reaction, honey.”

“I just… It feels like you’re hiding something from me.” She frowned and looked at the floor.

How was I busted? I had been so careful. I had no idea how Jocelyn was picking up on any of this.

“Honey,” I began. “Mrs. Anderson told me after her reaction that she was allergic to certain herbs. I had no idea she was either, but she said she found out when she was a little girl. Usually, they’re rare enough that she doesn’t have to worry, but I guess there were some at the farmer’s market. It was terrifying, Jocelyn. I wouldn’t lie about something so scary.”

Jocelyn looked unconvinced, but her expression softened.

To my credit, I was telling the truth. Mrs. Anderson’s allergic reaction was completely unexpected, but the magical solution would just have to turn into an EpiPen or some over-the-counter allergy medication for the sake of keeping magic hidden from the girls.

“I’ve just had a bad feeling about everything lately. Like everyone is trying to hide stuff from me.”

I felt insanely guilty. Jocelyn was very intuitive. She wasn’t picking this up from nowhere. I was hiding some pretty massive secrets from her, even if they were for her own good. Her sister, however, I had fewer answers for.
