I jogged into the shadowy woods, paused, and listened intently. A twig snapped somewhere up ahead and to my left. I veered that way and caught sight of Tatiana up ahead.

She walked at a fast clip across the bed of pine needles, between pine trees so tall they looked like skyscrapers to me. In all my years of living in and around Denver, I’d never spent much time in woods like this. The sky above that peeked through the treetops looked bright and blue. The trees, dark green, splashed cool colors across my line of sight, like I’d stepped into a painting of dark trunks, fuzzy branches, and an amber forest floor.

When I heard voices up ahead I slowed and crouched down. My backside scratched against a shrub with thorns and I scooted away, fast. Ouch. That was one nice thing about city living—no pricker bushes to reach out and snatch you when you weren’t expecting it. But, the view out here in the country was nice and the air smelled so clean, I figured most days that the good outweighed the bad.

I’d started to really like the woods over the past few months. Now, being out here with a woman I didn't know or trust who might be a killer made me feel different. The trees didn’t feel so awe-inspiring, and the sense of being so remote and removed from the world gave me the chills rather than the usual sense of peace and wellbeing.

If I screamed out here, would anyone hear me?

I doubted it, and that made me want to be really careful about how close I got to whoever was having a conversation up ahead.

It sounded like two people. Tatiana and someone else. A man, by the sound of it. But, who?

Seeing as they’d met up out here in the middle of a dark, remote forest, I figured they wanted some privacy and wouldn’t be all too happy to find out that I’d joined them. So, I had to be careful they didn’t hear me or see me.

I duck-walked forward a few feet and winced when my boot landed on a stick that was covered in leaves and snapped it. The cracking sound seemed to me to be as loud as a baseball bat striking a fastball. I froze still and perked my ears up to see if I’d given myself away.

Nope. The murmured conversation continued on, only now that I was a bit closer I could hear better.

“You have to,” Tatiana said, her voice a cross between a seductive purr and a desperate whine.

“I don’t have to do anything.”

“You do, Brock. It’s only fair.”

“There’s no such thing as fair in this life, woman. If there was fair, we’d both be a long ways from right where we’re standing. I can tell you that much.”

“Well, then, do it because I’m asking. Can’t you see I’m scared?”

“Of Remi? She’s nothing but a short-timer. She’ll be gone off this ranch by the time fall comes around, you mark my words.
