Unsafe House

“But it seems, in tragedy, that innocence is not enough.”

A dark grey Jaguar sedan pulled up next to Victoria. The tinted driver’s window rolled down.

“Get in,” Adrian said from the front seat. Victoria hesitated, then cut around the car and climbed into the passenger seat. The driver behind them blew his horn impatiently, and Victoria flicked him off.

After she buckled her seatbelt, she turned on Adrian.

“You didn’t have anything to do with this, did you?” she demanded. He had wanted her to come to the parole hearing. He had spoken about Achilles earlier in the day. Did he arrange for the disgraced hero to escape, too?

“No, but I honestly wish I had,” Adrian replied. He pressed the gas to the floor, and the car roared forward. He smoothly slid in and out of lanes, cutting around the traffic. Victoria gripped her seat and tried not to hyperventilate. Expensive leather squished under her clenched fingers. She consciously loosed her grip to not permanently damage Adrian’s luxury car.

“Do you know what kind of man Achilles was?” Adrian asked her sourly. Victoria shrugged, not sure why it mattered.

“He was a weightlifter. All set to be on the Olympic team. Then, bam. The event. Suddenly people can start shooting fireballs from their hands, flying, and he can lift a train like it weighs nothing. Most men would think they’d hit the jackpot. Everything he could ask for in life, handed to him. A gold medal. Sponsorships, wealth and fame. But not Jameson. He quit and retired to working as a personal trainer. If he couldn’t do it honestly he wouldn’t do it at all.” Adrian paused. “Everyone has forgotten the man he was, and that is a mistake.”

“Are you trying to say he didn’t do all those terrible things?” Victoria demanded. Adrian shook his head.

“No, he most certainly did. The man is broken. Who knows if there is anything of Jameson Hirsch left after twenty years?” He paused.

“Going after him was spectacularly stupid, by the way,” he said as an aside. Victoria bristled.

“It was the right thing to do,” she snapped.

Adrian laughed.

“Jameson would have said that. But the right thing to do is not always the smart thing to do,” he paused for a second. “Rhiannon and Jameson always disagreed on that. Rhiannon always did the smart thing. Jameson always did the right thing.”

“And how is this the right thing?” she asked tentatively.

“Achilles is a wild card I didn’t expect. Someone is trying to force Pendragon into a corner. But why?” he frowned. “I can’t see anyone but Thanatos making a play like this. But why come after Pendragon after so many years?”

“And now we have no idea where Achilles has gone,” Victoria chimed in. Adrian scoffed.

“Oh, I have a very good idea of where he is. There is only one place he could go.”

“Then we have to go after him!”

“Didn’t we just have a conversation about right versus stupid? We can’t just charge right in and hope he won’t kill us. I don’t even know what he’s gunning for, other than Pendragon.
