When Shelton entered, Mina turned on him with a snarl. Jennifer came running to help me to my feet. I took my wand back from her with a whispered “Thanks,” hoping she’d take a hint and flee. I then grabbed the fallen scythe and made to join Shelton in facing off against Mina.

“No,” Shelton said out of the corner of his mouth. “Leave.”

You can’t win, he meant, and the grimness in his eyes told me he’d figured out the truth of our dilemma. Mina had already summoned a demon, and their combined forces had already killed one Reaper. With my abilities cut off, I’d be a liability even with a scythe.

Yet… I couldn’t leave him to fight Mina alone.

The demon spoke through her mouth. “I’ll kill all of you.”

Shelton gestured at the door again. “Get out, Maura.”

And he ran at her, swinging his scythe. As expected, his weapon bounced off Mina as though she was surrounded by an invisible shield. What kind of spell is she using? It must have had a limit, and while she might be Reaper-proof and witch-proof, she wasn’t plain-old-human-proof.

I pushed the scythe into a startled Jennifer’s hands and tackled Mina from behind. She staggered, losing her balance, and Shelton caught her by the scruff of her neck. Her hands flailed, and I glimpsed a gleaming ring on one finger. That was new. She’s not married, is she?

The gleam gained a shimmering sheen, and the penny dropped.

“Hey!” I shouted, gearing up to tackle her again.

Shadows oozed out of Mina’s body, and Shelton let go of her as though burned. Recovering, she lunged at him, and he sidestepped, eyes narrowed in fury. “Maura, I told you—”

“You need a hand,” I retaliated, putting emphasis on the last word. Triumph stirred when his gaze caught on the gleaming ring on her finger. Her talisman.

Unfortunately, that was when Mina spun around and grabbed me by the throat.

I gagged, choking, hands reaching to pry her loose. Shadows oozed up my neck, and a chill numbed my skin. My fingers twitched, trying to grasp the ringed finger.

A thud resounded, and Mina let go of me. Jennifer stood behind her, her eyes wild and the scythe in her hands. While the scythe itself had bounced off its target, she’d had the surprisingly helpful idea of striking Mina in the back of the head with the hilt. Shelton was ready, and in a fluid motion, he seized Mina’s hand and pulled the ring free.

“You!” The shriek that erupted from Mina was definitely her own voice, not the demon’s, but the shadows that surged over Shelton undeniably belonged to the latter. They closed around his legs, rooting him to the spot.

He shouldn’t have a problem with that, I thought—but his eyes had widened, and he gave yet another furious gesture towards the door.

“Run.” He swung his fist, and the ring came sailing towards me.

I raised a hand, caught the ring, and then finally obeyed Shelton’s signal to run. As I did, Mina gave another shriek and lunged forward.
