CHAPTER EIGHT

“You should know that I’m married to the county sheriff,” Maggie said quickly. The man stopped in his tracks. “I’m serious. His name is Brett Mission, and he’s on his way here.”

“Is that why he and his deputy left already?” the man spoke at last.

“What do you want?” Ruby demanded.

“I want to know what you’re doing here,” the man said.

“We happen to own this building,” Maggie said. She reached around and pulled her phone carefully from her pocket.

“I wouldn’t do that if I were you,” the man said.

“Do what exactly?” Ruby asked.

“Your friend thinks she’s going to call the police on me,” the man said. “But I’m afraid I can’t let that happen.”

“Then what exactly do you intend to let happen?” Ruby said. Maggie was shocked at the fury in her voice. “Are you going to hurt two innocent women and just think nothing will happen to you? Because my friend is right. She’s married to the county sheriff. If you saw the deputy here earlier, then you saw him as well. He’ll be right back.”

“Is that supposed to make me afraid or something?” the man said.

“You’re here illegally, I would think that would make you afraid,” Ruby said.

“Well, I have bad news for you, it doesn’t.” The man smirked.

“Who are you?” Maggie demanded. “And what are you doing in this place.”

“I happen to own this place,” the man said.

“No, you don’t,” Ruby said. “Check bank records. You’ll find out we just purchased this place.”

“That’s funny,” he said. “Because it wasn’t for sale.”

“The former owner before us was the real estate agent who showed us the property,” Maggie said. “Because you’ve obviously been living under a rock, you should know that this place hasn’t been owned by anyone else for a number of years.”

“That isn’t true,” the man said. His took another step toward them. “I do own this building. It’s mine and I haven’t sold it to anyone.”

“Is that why you dumped trash all over the storage room in the back?” Maggie asked.

“What I did with that room is none of your business,” the man said.

“Actually, it is our business,” Ruby said. She leaned over Maggie’s shoulder. “Go ahead and make that phone call.”

Maggie said nothing but held her phone out in front of her. The man stepped forward, raised his hand, and swiped at her. Ruby pulled her back in time to avoid the man smacking the phone out of her hand. “You’re going to wish you hadn’t done that,” she said. She tapped her screen and began to dial.

“Maggie, look who just pulled up,” Ruby said. They stood about fifteen feet away from the man in clear view of the front windows. Maggie raised her eyes and looked outside to see Brett pull up in his pickup truck. He stepped out in full uniform and rushed toward the front door.

Without another word, the man headed through the kitchen door, barely missing Ruby. Maggie rushed toward the door, turning the lock to allow Brett inside. “In the kitchen,” she shouted.
