Chapter 9
Ginleigh Military Installation
New Mexico
Never before in their relationship had Jane gone out of her way to avoid Alex, but the trouble was in this tiny installation there wasnât much room to steer clear of anyone. She was overwhelmed with smoldering anger over the horrid details of the Human Enhancement Program, which was all anyone online could talk about. Whatever results Alexâs speech and executive actions wouldâve had were superseded by the news, which made the protests around the country worse than ever.
And for Jane, the flimsy pretense for staying at the military installation had run its course. What felt like a quirky trip before was now just an utterly pointless waste of time.
She sat alone in the dining hall during breakfast, unable to keep herself from glaring at Alex, who was eating silently with Tanner and some of the other staff members. Many others had left, and not simply to return to Washington. Some had literally quit their jobs. Jane was contemplating how she could depart on her own, possibly hitching a ride with the Secret Service during the next staff rotation, when she sensed someoneâs presence behind her.
Thank goodness it wasnât Alex.
âYou mind if I sit down?â asked Arundhati Singh, carrying a tray with a bran muffin, a banana, and a small milk carton.
âIâm not going to stop you,â Jane said.
Singh settled down. Although Jane avoided staring daggers at Alex, the chief of staff glanced between her and the president across the room. This was the first time theyâd spoken alone since the day her new arrangement began.
âI know it looks bad right now, but Iâd encourage you to look beyond todayâs news cycle,â she said simply, peeling her banana.
Jane gawked at her like sheâd said she was starving her own children. It was incredibly bothersome that this woman sheâd looked up to wasnât disturbed much at all, and there was only one reasonable explanation.
âYou knew about this. You knew all along,â Jane said. Singh didnât flinch.
âOf course I did. When President Morrin wants something done, he comes to me. I helped him arrange the partnership with BioLathe as soon as he got into office.â
Jane was beside herself how any of that could be said so calmly.
âAnd it didnât occur to you at all that this was the most horrible, ghastly thing possible to do? I mean, the Human Enhancement Program. It sounds like a science fiction scheme cooked up by a mad scientist,â Jane said, struggling to keep her voice down. Being professional and courteous were her things, but this was so far beyond anything that could be dealt with cooly.
Singh kept her calm.
âWe never intended to announce the program this way. It wouldnât have looked like this,â she said, but Jane was already ten steps beyond that in her racing mind, which had gone all the way back to that meeting in Singhâs office, where she had promised to stand with him no matter what.
âYou knew this was going on, and you didnât bother to tell me at the start.
