After a fitful sleep, Colette looked at the alarm clock⦠again. Eight-thirty was late enough to wake up, wasnât it? She slipped from the bed and cracked open the bedroom door. Alan was still asleep on the sofa with a pair of jeans and his shirt piled on the floor. As quiet as she could, she found her way into the kitchen in search of coffee.
After opening three cabinet doors, she found a container of store-brand coffee next to a pound of unopened sugar and a stack of coffee filters. Carefully, she scooped the grains into a filter. With each calculated movement, she glanced over to Alan. He hadnât stirred. Not even when she turned on the faucet to fill the glass pot with water.
With bated breath, she watched the coffee slowly drip before it dispensed at a full stream. The aroma filled the room. She cradled an empty cup and looked over again, and he finally moved.
âCoffee?â
âYeah,â he muttered, stretching his arms above his head.
Colette averted her eyes, but the developed muscles in his arms made her want to know how they would feel around her. She stared at the pot, which seemed to fill slower now than it did before.
âWhatâs on the agenda today?â
He rubbed his eyes. âWhat day is today?â
âSaturday.â
âThis afternoon thereâs a picnic in the park.â
âA picnic? Like with wicker baskets and fried chicken?â She remembered him mentioning it last night at dinner, but that seemed like such a long time ago.
He laughed. âAnd potato salad, lemonade, and little old ladies in their Sunday best. Havenât you been to a town picnic before?â
She shook her head. âI donât think itâd be a good idea to go out, especially with a stalker on the loose.â The pot finally filled, and she poured two cups of coffee.
âItâs not like theyâre going to do anything with dozens of people around. Otherwise they wouldnât have slipped a note under the door.â
He had a point. Besides, it wasnât like there was much to do anyway, other than stay inside and hide.
âAlright. I guess weâre going to a picnic.â She warmed her hands around the cup. âHave you heard anything about last night?â
He lifted his brow. âNothing yet. But I just woke up, remember?â
Her face turned red. Of course, he did. She hadnât even checked to see if she had any messages or if anyone had commented on her vlog.
Alan set his cup on the counter. âIf itâs okay with you, Iâm going to hop in the shower. Then we can get some breakfast.â
âOkay.â Her face turned red when his words created a vivid image in her mind. âI just need to grab a couple of thingsâ¦â She rushed from the kitchen to the bedroom. The change of scenery didnât erase the thought in her mind. Knowing he would be undressing in the bedroom only enhanced it. She picked up her computer and grabbed her phone. Maybe sheâd be able to regain her focus in the living room.
She curled up on the sofa and checked her cell.
