CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

Rachel placed a call to Agent Duvall, asking her if she could work with the local PD to get a name and address for the number she’d taken out of Robin’s phone. This was done before they even got back into their car. The afternoon was winding on, and the heat felt oppressive yet again. She couldn’t imagine working a beat in this miserable heat, especially on a case like this one that continued to lead her out into the desert.

As Rachel got behind the wheel of the car, she set her phone on speaker mode. Within seconds of buckling her seat belt, Duvall’s voice was speaking into the car. “Okay, so I got a name and an address for that number. Brett Alvarez, and he lives in Foxham. I’m texting you the address right now.”

“I’m really getting tired of making this little jaunt between Albuquerque and Foxham,” Jack said.

“I know, right?” Duvall said. “And the scenery all starts to look the same, too, right?”

“Eh, I haven’t gotten tired of it yet,” Jack commented.

“Agent Duvall, would you mind checking to see if Mr. Alvarez has a record of any kind?”

“Sure thing. I’ll get back to you as soon as I get something.”

They ended the call and Rachel pulled directions to Alvarez’s place up on her phone. She was really enjoying having access to a third agent and not having to deal directly with the local PD. She rather wished she had an Agent Duvall on all cases going forward.

And how many more cases do you think that might be? she asked herself. Actually, the comment presented itself to her in Peter’s voice. One more case? Maybe two? Let’s not forget that you’re on a ticking clock, Rach.

But for half a day or so, she’d managed to almost forget it. She’d been able to work this case without being hindered by her diagnosis. She’d had a slight headache yesterday and nothing more—and really, that could have been nothing more than the product of the intense desert heat.

They’d been driving toward the address—now just eleven miles away—when Duvall called back. Rachel answered on speaker mode so Jack could also listen in. “So there is a bit of a record on our friend Brett Alvarez,” she said. “Two years ago, he was charged with assault. He assaulted an intoxicated woman at a party. And this party just happened to be out in the desert, around a big bonfire.”

“Well, that certainly lines up,” Rachel said

“Yeah, I thought so, too. Oh, and it gets even better. While I was looking into that, I had a cop take a look at the phone records of Malorie and Valerie. Brett Alvarez’s number was in both of their phones. Malorie had him saved as ‘Alvy’ and Valerie had him saved as ‘Happy Man.’”

“That’s…incriminating.”

“I’ll say. How much further do you have before you arrive?”

“About ten miles. Thanks for all of this, Duvall. You’ve been a massive help.”

“I do what I can.”

They ended the call, and with this new information on Alvarez, Rachel pressed on the gas a bit harder.
