As he read the list of detailed chores that I usually did anyway, my anger simmered hotter and hotter. When he got to the end, where Paul had just signed his name with no polite salutation or anything, I boiled over.

“I can't believe him!” I yelled. “How dare he?”

Jason looked at me. “Don't yell at me. I didn't write it.”

“You're right. You didn't.”

I stood, snatched the letter out of his hands, and marched into the front room. Paul was back in his chair, and Linda was darning his pants on the couch. I stood in front of Paul and glowered at him. He glanced at me and back at the TV.

Oh, no. He was not going to ignore me after all that. I grabbed the remote off of his side table and muted the game.

I picked up where I had left off. “How dare you! How dare you turn on your own son for something that he's not even involved with! If Linda—” pointing a finger behind me toward the couch, “—has a problem with my help, she needs to come to me. She's not said a word to me about her dissatisfaction with my help nor about her heart palpitations! And you should come to us face-to-face, not hiding behind a letter!” I waved it in his face.

Paul pursed his lips. He said quietly as if to a child, “Do not raise your voice to your elders, young lady. This is my house.”

Another avoidance!

“Oh, no, sir! You don't get to cower behind your authority! Be a real leader and do some shepherding once in a while! Maybe listen to both sides of the story! I've been helping out whenever Linda asks. I do whatever she tells me to. It's not my fault that she leaves for appointments and errands without telling me what she wants me to do next.”

“You should be asking more, then. Volunteering your time.”

“Volunteering? For $200 a month, you think you've bought yourselves a slave, too? I don't think so! I'm so sick of this passive-aggression! Just tell me what you think!”

A flash of conviction hit my heart as I realized that I had been doing the same thing with Jason. I pushed it down. I didn't have time to deal with that right now. I was on a roll.

“And another thing. I've been taking care of both my dog and both of yours! Did she mention that, huh? If she would just keep to a schedule like any organized person and do a specific chore on the same day every week, I would know what to do without asking her every five minutes! It's not my house, as you have reminded me. I don't want to take over her kitchen and her way of doing things. I would hate for someone to come into my house and do that to me. I was trying not to do that to her. You can bet we're going to deprive you of your slave as soon as possible
