Chapter Seventeen

The following week was a stressful one, largely because Claire barely spent any time with Alex. Or, at least, very few of her waking hours. Eager to prove to Sarah that Alex wasn’t the worst thing to ever happen to her in any way, Claire threw herself into her work, even putting in over a dozen of the extra hours she’d long gifted to the company in lieu of having a personal life. She still slept at Alex’s place, and they’d even managed to have sex once, late Tuesday night, but after Claire realized how tired she was the next morning at the office, she declared a moratorium on intimate encounters until the weekend to give herself a chance to catch up on her many lapsed responsibilities.

By the time Saturday rolled around, Claire was both ready and eager for a long, uninterrupted day with the woman she loved. Sarah and Marcus were visiting the redwoods with out-of-town friends, so spending time together was a blissfully guilt-free decision, making it far easier for Claire to relax and enjoy a much-needed reunion with Alex. Though they’d been able to finish their conversation about Vanessa—concluding that she was an unambiguously awful human being that neither one of them ever wanted to see again—they still hadn’t had a real opportunity to reestablish the easy intimacy they’d settled into before Vanessa’s reappearance and Claire’s forgotten meeting had disrupted the sanctity of the perfect little bubble they’d retreated inside while falling in love.

When Claire awoke on Saturday morning, she craned to look out the curtained window of her apartment to discover an already vibrant blue sky. Rolling to face her still-slumbering big spoon, Claire grinned at the sight of her lover wrapped in the quilt her parents had given her as a high school graduation gift, to keep her warm at college. When Alex had insisted they spend Friday night at Claire’s place so Sarah would be less likely to interrupt any drowsy lovemaking they might be able to achieve, Claire had initially balked at the slightly longer commute, but now she had to admit that it was nice to wake up and see naked Alex Williams in her bed.

Like she belonged there.

Alex opened her eyes and returned Claire’s grin. In a scratchy voice, she rasped, “Hey. Good morning.”

“Good morning.” Claire lifted the comforter so she could slide her naked body against Alex’s. Their limbs entwined naturally as they settled into the most comfortable cuddling position Claire had ever achieved. “Oh, that feels good.”

Alex tightened her arms, kissing Claire’s hair. “It really, really does.”

Neither of them rushed to initiate anything more intense than the tender embrace. For a few minutes, they simply lay chest-to-chest, Claire focusing on Alex’s heartbeat while wondering whether Alex was similarly fascinated by the rhythm of hers. Then Alex’s hands found her shoulders and stroked gently down her back, landing on her ass with a flirtatious caress. Claire drew back to meet Alex’s eyes. Without speaking, she snaked her hand between their bodies and cupped Alex’s vulva provocatively.
