Chapter Twelve

Holden

Three days later, I was back to exactly the same place I’d been ten days ago. I was a frantic research scientist, scrambling to prove that the innovation I’d designed in honor of my papa would work so that my boss would continue to fund the damned thing. And I was still a single alpha past the age when most men had found mates, daydreaming about the sassy, cheeky, wonderful omega with whom I’d had what amounted to a fleeting encounter.

Only now, I was sitting at a boardroom table, surrounded by executives and other scientists, explaining all the ways Heat Lightning had gone wrong. With exceptionally personal details.

“The test started out promisingly,” I explained, glancing across the table to Sal and Nick, then around to the half dozen others who had been called in for this meeting. “The subject was a twenty-two-year-old, unattached omega who had had six previous heats. He happened to go into heat as I was interviewing him, and the decision was made to initiate the Heat Lightning test on the spot.”

“Without fully vetting the omega?” Bob, one of the older alphas who oversaw the entire scientific and medical division of B&M asked.

I squirmed, trying to remain as professional as possible. “The subject was somewhat familiar to me from a previous encounter,” I admitted.

“A sexual encounter?” Lisa, the head of personnel asked. Lisa always had been as blunt as a cudgel.

“No, not at all,” I said, then cleared my throat. Damn, the room was getting hot.

“Did you at least manage a full medical history of the omega before beginning the test?” Bob asked.

I had screwed up so badly, and every second I sat around the table with these people made me see it more and more. I’d be surprised if I still had a job at the end of the meeting.

“Not per se,” I said with a wince. “We covered a lot of that information in the first day of his heat, though.”

“So you didn’t check to see if there were any conflicting factors in his medical history that might have ruled him out as a candidate for the test?” Bob asked with a frown.

“No.” I was toast. They’d probably strip me of my PhD after this.

“Then why did you agree to use this omega for the test?” Garrett, and alpha who worked in the marketing department, asked.

“The omega in question was Arlo Tozzi,” Nick answered for me, impatience clear in his voice.

“Evan Mercer’s biggest fan?” Garrett asked, surprised.

I blew out a breath. “I am aware of the conflict of interest involved in choosing to test Heat Lightning with Arlo,” I said. I needed to get the meeting back on track before I was discredited entirely. “It was a glaring mistake on my part, and I take full responsibility for my lack of judgement.”

Bob grunted, which was absolutely not a good sign. Sal might have been my ultimate boss, but Bob was my supervisor. He’d already dragged me into his office and raked me over the
