Chapter Eighteen

Viola had been awake for around three hours and Nixon was sprawled out next to her deep asleep. He showed no signs of waking up any time soon. Her body was on fire both figuratively and literally.

Earlier, she woke up drenched in sweat and her pregnant belly was very itchy. She tried to wake Nixon up but he didn’t respond to her. She couldn’t handle feeling sticky and itchy in her clothes so she got out of bed and waddled to the bathroom.

Getting into the bathtub was a struggle but she managed to get in. While she cooled off her body, she secretly hoped Nixon would join her but he didn’t. She craved his touch and she wanted to make love with him.

After her bath, she walked back to the bedroom and tried to wake Nixon up again. He must have been really tired because he didn’t move when she lay next to him naked. She scrunched her nose in disgust when she kissed him on the cheek and caught a whiff of his smell. Why did he stink? He smelled like a mixture of sweat, alcohol, cigarettes, and perfume.

Before Viola could analyze why Nixon smelled like those things, her stomach lurched and she went to the nearest trash bin to vomit. Great, she couldn’t be near him until he washed himself clean and smelled fresh. After she rinsed her mouth in the bathroom, she looked through her maternity clothes. She wanted to wear a new outfit.

Viola smiled when she looked into mirror and saw how the green top she wore clung to her pregnant belly. She liked that the top didn’t make her look like a big whale. Then she slipped into a pair of black stretchy pants.

What to do now? She was all dressed up with nowhere to go. It was a beautiful clear day outside and she wished she could go somewhere. A simple trip to McDonald’s would have provided a lot of entertainment for her. She was so hungry so could eat a million chicken McNuggets drenched with barbecue sauce. She wished Nixon would wake up so she wouldn’t drown in boredom and he could get her food.

“Nixon!” She poked his shoulder with her finger. He mumbled something incoherent but continued to keep his eyes closed.

“Fine, be a sleepyhead. I can have fun without you.”

Viola was hungry so she went downstairs and headed straight to the kitchen. She opened the refrigerator door and immediately saw two leftover slices of pizza from yesterday. She placed the two slices onto a plate and heated them up in the microwave for a few seconds. When the timer dinged, she carefully pulled out the hot plate and sat down at the nearby table.

The two slices of pizzas were gone within ten minutes. Her hunger wasn’t satisfied so she rummaged through the fridge for something else to eat. She came up empty and wished she could go out and drive somewhere to get real food. What Nixon had in his fridge didn’t count.
