When they turned down the driveway Winston pushed Adrian towards the wood shed. âOpen the door,â he said to Shaka and she obeyed. âGet in,â he said, this time to Adrian, and he ducked into the dark shed. âNow lock it up,â he said to Shaka and again, she obeyed. When she turned around, Winston was staring at her with hateful eyes and his mouth pulled into a frown. âYou disappoint me,â he said. Shaka felt a pang of guilt at his words, but quickly hardened herself to them.
âWell you impress me,â she replied. âThank you for not killing him.â
âYou bring the enemy to my doorstep and wonât even admit who he is. Canât you see heâs playing you? I hadnât pegged you for such a dumb girl!â
Shakaâs lip curled at his insult. âMaybe Iâm dumb, but youâre definitely unhinged. I mean, only one of us is holding a rifle and yelling about revenge. And if you were able to let that go for one second, would it be so hard to imagine that someone whoâs been inside that lab would be disgusted by it and want to shut it down? If he helps us we could just slip in and make all the captives disappear overnight. We wouldnât need to wage a war.â
âYes, Shaka, I understand, it would all end in rainbows if he were telling the truth, but what if heâs not? Hereâs what we know about him,â he said as he stuck one finger up in the air: âHe was once on their side, regardless of whether he is now or not.â He stuck another finger up in the air. âHe feigned an attraction to you and lied to you to learn more about your abilities and get closer to me.â He pointed a third finger in the air. âHe followed you for days, then tried to confront you alone in the woods. And,â he pointed his fourth finger in the air, âwhen he found himself at the mercy of a wolf woman, he told you he wanted to help.â
âI know it looks bad ââ
âThatâs one fucking way to put it.â
âAnd you might be right. If you are I wonât stand in your way, but we donât know that for sure yet.â
âYou donât know that for sure, I do.â
âOkay, fine. You donât have to listen, but Iâm going to see what he will tell me.â As she spoke Terryâs truck turned down the driveway. They both looked at it and took a step away from one another. The old truck rolled to a stop with a squeak from the brakes and Terry killed the engine. Then Terry, Whisper and Michal all jumped out.
âDad!â Michal yelled as he ran toward Winston, his arms giving short, abrupt swings and his belly shifting in his T-shirt.
âDo you want to go to the quarry today?â
âIâve got work to do, Mikey,â Winston said. Michalâs eyes fell on the rifle in his dadâs hands.
âCan we shoot guns then?â he asked.
âI just told you Iâve got work to do.
