CHAPTER 13
"If it were easy, it would not be any fun." ~ T. Jay Taylor
Sarah
We were off to Iran. We had this false sense of security because of our disguises and the car we were driving, but the litmus test would be when we got through the passport control at the border.
"There is a map in the glove compartment; can you check our route? I don't want to miss any turnings. Believe me when I say that I have had enough of this country." Tanya spoke while concentrating on the road. Unlike England and Pakistan, everyone here drove on the right-hand side instead of the left; therefore, until she was used to it, she wanted to be careful and not unconsciously drift to the other side.
"We have to follow the road we are on to a border town called Islam Qala, where they have the overland passport control, and then from there we will travel to Taybad, which is the closest town on the other side near the border in Iran."
Tanya nodded indicating that she had heard me, all the while keeping her eyes on the road.
"Oh, listen to this!" I said excitedly as I read a footnote on the map. "Did you know that the road we are on is part of the Asian Highway Network? Apparently, it starts in Tokyo and then winds via Istanbul until it connects with a major highway that ends in Lisbon! How cool is that?" Since we were travelling on relatively unknown roads for the next couple of days, I wanted to learn as much as I could about the places we were going to visit. Maybe I would write everything down in my journal⦠No, not then, but I would write down everything once we got home. For now, it could be a security risk if my journal landed in enemy hands.
"Andy said it was a ninety-minute drive to the border, so why don't you lower the back of your seat and have a nap?" said Tanya. "When we reach Iran, if I am tired, I will ask you to drive for a little while."
"Are women allowed to drive in Iran?" I was intrigued. After seeing how women were suppressed in Afghanistan, I wondered how they were treated in Iran after the revolution.
"Yes, they are. Even though Islamic laws are strict in Iran, women have some sort of freedom and are allowed to drive, though many with chaperones. And I heard they are slowly softening their stance on that as well." Tanya gave me a quick look and a smile. "Especially for professional women like doctors."
"Hmmmâ¦" I murmured. I was already lulled to sleep by the movement of the car. I had chosen a black chador with very small white daisies printed on it. It was big enough for me to cover my face to block out the sunlight as I slept. When I drew the chador over my head, I heard Tanya chuckle. "No need to laugh at me; I am just being the good little Iranian wifey," I said in a whimsical voice.
