CHAPTER 10

Randi returned from church in a good mood. The sun had come out, and the temperature had risen to the high forties, making it a very nice day. Byron greeted her with perky ears and a wagging tail before performing his usual beeline for the door to the backyard. “I’m coming,” she called.

Leaving it ajar, she strolled back to hang her coat in the front closet and glanced at herself in the hallway mirror. Randi preferred jeans and a t-shirt to every other form of clothing, yet occasionally, she liked to dress up for a change of pace. For class, she usually wore slacks and button-up shirt and blazer or a sweater in the winter and her church didn’t require dressing up; often one or both pastors were in jeans; however, today she had felt like slipping on a dress and pantyhose just to see if she could pull off a feminine appearance. She pushed up her glasses and skewed the corners of her mouth at her reflection. The dress was nice enough, except her figure was so straight it seemed to Randi pointless to wear women’s clothing. She swished to the side. I can tell I have breasts, she noted, and a tiny bum some might determine belonged to a woman. I’ll bet Tori has an amazing body, like Jenna does.

With a dissatisfied sigh, she marched to the open door, where Byron met her with a greenish-yellow tennis ball and dropped it at her feet. His expectant expression was too adorable to ignore. “OK, bubby. A few ball throws.”

Randi’s thoughts lingered on Jenna while she played fetch with her friendly giant of a dog. They hadn’t made definite plans for Valentine’s Day so Jenna wouldn’t end up having to cancel and some restaurants would charge a fee for a same-day cancellation on Valentine’s. She hoped she would at least get to spend an hour or two with her cop, which all depended on this new investigation. Finding out what happened to the girl in the park took priority, and Randi had no issue with it.

Jenna needs stability in her life, she pondered, a rock she can count on to be there for her. Maybe Tuesday will be the right time for me to let her know how I really feel, to tell her I love her—no expectations, no strings, just put it out there so she doesn’t have to guess. She absently gave the ball another toss. And what if she isn’t ready to hear those words? What if I scare her off? I don’t want to put her on the spot where she feels like she has to say it back. Besides, Jenna is an excellent detective. I’m so obvious, she’s bound to know I love her without me having to say it. Still… I want to. I need her to understand I won’t leave her the way Tori did. She has enough important things to worry about without a flighty girlfriend added to her stress.

“Ironic, isn’t it Byron,” she said aloud, “after what I pulled yesterday? But we got it straightened out.
