Chapter Seventeen

Mandy and Jonathan started back to town. Mandy was still insisting that she believed the professor, and Jonathan was voicing his doubts about the validity of the statement about Professor Lindley’s strange feeling that freaked him out so badly that he bolted from the murder scene.

“Who does that?” he asked. “Who leaves the scene and a dead body lying in the park? He didn’t even call the police later. I’m just saying...it’s extremely weird behavior to me.”

Mandy opened her mouth to say something about how panic affects people differently when her phone rang. She took the opportunity to let the conversation between her and Jonathan cool a few degrees.

“It’s Charlene,” she said to Jonathan as she pressed the phone to her ear. “Hi, Charlene,” she said cheerier than she felt.

“Mandy, can you come to work? It’s Colin. He keeps picking fights with the staff and then threatening to sic his lawyers on anyone who touches him.” Her tone was frantic and her words were rushed.

Mandy’s heart twisted with the mention of Colin and his trouble-making ways. She glanced at Jonathan. “I’ll be there as soon as I can, Char. Has he hurt anyone?”

“No. Not yet, but if this keeps up, I can’t say that someone won’t hurt him. He can only throw around the lawyer threat so long before he gets clocked upside the head.”

“I know. I’m on my way. Just don’t get in his way. Okay?” She worried that Charlene would try to step between Colin and his target and become the victim. Colin’s temper was the stuff of legend. If he’d never become famous for his acting, she thought it was likely he would have become infamous because his temper would have caused him to do something terrible.

“Just hurry. Please.”

Mandy assured her friend and then ended the call. “I need to go to the Cracked Mug. Colin’s there causing all sorts of trouble with the staff.”

Jonathan nodded, and Mandy was sure she caught a little sparkle in his eyes. “By all means. I’ll go with you...I don’t want you going alone knowing that he’s there and already causing trouble.”

“You don’t mind?” She was glad he volunteered to accompany her.

He shook his head and scoffed. “Absolutely not. Just a little detour.”

They arrived at the pub, and Colin could be heard outside as he taunted some poor soul about how much of a loser the person was and how much better he was. She distinctly heard Colin call the other person a peon, a mere peasant meant for a life of servitude.

Her blood boiled. She detested anyone who could talk that way to another person. She yanked the door open and strode to where Colin was at the bar.

“Colin,” she exclaimed with anger. “What are you doing? Why are you acting like this?”

He turned and grinned down at her. It was more of a leer that caused her skin to tighten and her scalp to tingle—not in a pleasant way.

“Well, look at this. The little princess arrives.” He looked up and snorted laughter when he saw Jonathan.
