Brett Prentice stepped out of the shower, and as he squeezed a dollop of toothpaste on his brush, his phone rang. He ignored it. This is Friday night and the night before Christmas Eve, a huge night at the bars. Besides, it was probably Shane trying to apologize again. After fifteen ignores, figure he'd get the hint.
Prentice gazed in the mirror trying to see if Shane had left any bruises. Unfortunately, he didn't have any black eyes or other conversation starters. Lincoln Park girls were usually way into cops, and a black eye was easy to shoehorn into any conversation. Wicker Park girls tend to be a little more hipster, so the cop thing didn't fly quite as well with them. It was a tough week at work, so tonight needed to be a sure thing. That meant Lincoln Park.
Back in his regular beat cop days, the other guys would constantly bust his chops about being all metro, whatever that meant. Bunch of jealous meatheads.
Besides, it wasn't like he spent a lot of time with those guys. Eighteen months after he joined the force, he was promoted to Narcotics and no longer had to put up with them.
Not that things were so great in Narcotics either. Just another good ol' boy network, and he didn't want to spend his free time hanging out at their poker games. Prentice only needed the job. Nothing else mattered.
He wanted to catch bad guys. So he became a cop. It's why he worked Homicide now. Though in all honesty, he started to think he belonged in Internal Affairs. Most of the department would agree. Bunch of pussies.
Prentice had plenty of friends outside the system. The guys he went to college with, his fraternity brothers from DePaul, were all the friends he ever needed.
Still clad in a towel, Prentice wandered around his tastefully decorated Lake View apartment. It was easier to iron his pants in the kitchen than the bedroom.
The phone rang again. "Dammit."
Shane again. What a disaster. Although Prentice had no one to blame but himself. His first major case, and he already made a complete fiasco out of the whole thing. The phone rang again.
He shook his hand and set the iron down before answering.
"Hey, hey, Sully!"
Tom Sullivan was his college roommate. As close as they used to be, the two hadn't spent much time together since Sully got married a few summers ago.
"Shelly letting you outta the cage tonight?" he asked.
"Kiss my ass, bitch," Sully said over the phone. "You coming down here or am I gonna have to come up and whoop your ass?"
"Settle down, Sully. I'll be down in five minutes. I just gotta put on some pants." Ironic since the whole point of tonight was to take them off.
"Hurry up, man. I don't do this too often. I wanna get back out there!"
Sully had always been Prentice's best wingman. The two of them called themselves Maverick and Goose back in college. Tonight they were going to fly high and relive old times.
