The Trumans’ 1944 inaugural invitation. Truman Library.

Harry Truman was inaugurated as vice president of the United States on January 20, 1945. Some Independence family members and residents traveled to Washington for the festivities. Natalie Wallace was present for the ceremonies, and when she returned, she sent Bess a letter thanking her “for all you did for us.” She then wrote, “I’ve decided you must like Independence or us very much to make the trip back and forth as often as you do.”122

The Truman family moved back to Washington, and Harry assumed the duties of vice president. Bess continued her activities as the wife of the vice president, and Margaret attended George Washington University, where she received an Associate of Arts degree in 1944 and a Bachelor of Arts degree in history in 1946. She also launched a singing career after graduation and made her first outdoor appearance at the Hollywood Bowl on August 23, 1947. Mrs. D.W. Wallace accompanied her daughter and granddaughter to Washington.
