CHAPTER EIGHTEEN
The man looked at report after report after report that had been shown to him. Reports of how Tanner Dempsey could not be guilty.
He was their hero.
He was incapable of wrong.
How could the people here be so blind? Dempsey had managed to completely pull the wool over everyoneâs eyes. Convinced them he was infallible.
He was so, so fallible.
The people in this town, this county, obviously couldnât see what was right in front of them. Their letters proved how much Dempsey had fooled them. They argued for his innocence out of hand, never suspecting that Dempsey was the epitome of everything wrong with law enforcement.
Tanner Dempsey wasnât a hero; he was a villain. He should be shunned, not cheered. If it were anyone else who was accused of three murders, thereâd be a statewide manhunt, rather than everyone sitting around twiddling their thumbs, waiting for Dempsey to come back from his romantic getaway and explain himself.
As if he could explain away the darkness that encompassed his very soul.
The man realized he had miscalculated. Dempsey was never going to be taken down this way. Never going to rot in prison like the man had envisioned. There were too many people who would insist on his innocence even if he walked up and stabbed them in the chest.
Dempsey was certainly capable of it; the man knew that without a doubt.
The thought that Dempsey wouldnât pay for his crimes was unbearable.
But every day that he was allowed to run free, he came closer to clearing his name.
Because of that woman. The one who looked at him with such devotion in her eyes.
First, Dempsey fooled everyone into believing that he was an upstanding man of the law. And now he would also get to fall in love? To have a life and a happy ending with a beautiful woman? To not pay for his sins in any way?
It was time for a game change. Life in prison was too good for Dempsey.
Instead, Dempsey would lose everything. Starting with the woman and ending with his life.
