CHAPTER 16

“All right,” I said. “What’s the latest?”

Percy ran his fingers through his unruly hair and frowned, as if I had dissed him somehow.

“I’m sorry, if I sounded flippant,” I said. “Tell me what’s got you ready to pound the keyboard.”

“Krazy K,” Percy said. “He’s in the hospital. I didn’t get a chance to interview him. Those nurses are like pulling guards in football. They block all contact. I had half a mind to find some scrubs and a bucket and pretend to be the cleanup detail. No one ever really looks at the cleanup guys. They’re invisible. Did I ever tell you about—”

“Krazy K,” I interrupted. “You picked up some information about him?”

“I did indeed. But not directly. I managed to persuade a nurse, a rather pretty one at that, to have a cup of coffee with me. In fact, I promised her I would give her some space in a blog I was writing about the best nurses in town.”

“Are you writing that?”

“No, but I’m contemplating it. And, when I do write it, she’ll figure prominently. Percy Moreno always keeps a promise.”

“Promise me to be brief more often.”

“Ha, ha, very funny, Elle. You’re such a charmer.”

“Boooo,” Gus said.

I frowned at him, and I knew he had spoken because people would think it was a growl or something.

“That’s funny,” Emmy said.

“All right,” I said. “I think it’s time for some folks to take a walk.”

“Right you are,” Emmy said. “Gus?”

Gus stretched and left without a word. His feelings weren’t hurt. He was just saving some particularly good retort for later.

“Go on,” I told Percy.

“According to the nurse, the pretty nurse who likes to hear my voice.”

“Percy, I swear I’m going to create a spell where your voice will fail after seventeen words.”

“Point taken. She said that Krazy had been singed by the fire. He had cuts and bruises all over, as if some of the Throwbacks has whooped up on him. That didn’t happen, but it could have. Again, according to the nurse, Krazy was watching TV and drinking a soda, when there was a tremendous noise outside. The next thing he knew, a rescue squad was pulling him from the rubble. From there, he was strapped onto a gurney and transported to the hospital.”

“That doesn’t exactly fit Krazy,” I said. “He’s not the TV with soda type, is he?”

“You can’t expect him to confess to a nurse. I mean, he can’t very well say he was preparing cocaine for sale.”

“You’re right. Did she say how long he would be in the hospital?”

“At least one more day. There’s a question about a blow to the head. No doctor wants to turn him loose if he’s had a concussion.”

“Now, since I know you’re a professional reporter, what does Krazy’s house look like?”

Percy smiled. “You do know how to flatter, don’t you. And I appreciate it. Since, I am a fine reporter Krazy’s house looks exactly as you would expect. It’s a pile of rubble. That he is alive is a miracle.
