Most fillings are made of amalgam, a mixture of silver, mercury, and other metals. Amalgam fillings are often called “silver” fillings. But some people are worried about the mercury in these fillings. Mercury is dangerous when it gets into the body. What happens if pieces of amalgam break off and then get swallowed? Does all the mercury stay in the amalgam, or can it leak out into the body? Actually, health experts don’t all agree on whether amalgam fillings harm people. Still, some countries—Austria, Canada, Denmark, Germany, and Sweden—have banned or discouraged the use of amalgam fillings.
