Chapter 6

SUNBURN

A day at the beach is a lot of fun on a hot summer day. But if you’re not careful, a day of fun in the sun can lead to a very uncomfortable night. Sunburn is one of the most common kinds of burns. The sun sends out harmful ultraviolet rays (UV rays) that can make your skin red and painful when you stay out in it for too long. Sunburn is a warning that UV rays have hurt your skin. Even though the sunburn eventually goes away, the injury to the skin remains. Some studies show that kids who get sunburned have a higher risk of getting skin cancer as adults.
