6 Directions for Future Research and Clinical Practice

In conclusion, Canada has many well-established early psychosis clinics. There are a few established clinics for those at CHR. In some instances, CHR individuals may receive treatment through the early psychosis clinics. Future clinical practice may benefit from active inclusion of those at CHR in early psychosis clinics especially where there is not the population to support a specialized CHR clinic. New practice guidelines for schizophrenia have recently been developed and published in The Canadian Journal of Psychiatry with one chapter having a specific focus on youth at risk of psychosis (Addington, Addington, Abidi, Raedler, & Remington, 2017). These may help establish clinical practice.

With respect to research directions, there are several research centers that are actively conducting CHR research with ongoing studies and several completed studies whose results have been published. The ongoing efforts of these large consortia such as NAPLS in which Canadian research groups participate will hopefully lead to a better understanding of the neurobiology of APS and the risk factors that may predict the later onset of psychotic illness. It may be useful for Canada to perhaps develop consortia within Canada to further study those with APS, in particular, specific treatments for APS, that take into account the young age of most of those with APS.
