Chapter 12
As the gateway opened, the entire tunnel shook. It felt like a volcano on the brink of eruption. Try as I might to stay on my feet, the incessant rumbling brought me to my knees.
Murdoch yanked the key from the door, before it vanished into the floor.
When the rumbling subsided, I turned to Murdoch. âDefenses? That felt like a bloody earthquake. What is in there?â
Murdoch steadied himself. âLike I said, the wrath of God.â
âAnd what form does that take, exactly?â Lara asked. âIâve been pretty patient, but Iâve had just about enough of your damned secrets. Weâre here risking our lives to help you. Level with us now or so help me I will shoot you myself.â
âLara.â I reached out to hold her off Murdoch.
âNo, Seth, enough. Youâre too willing to trust people. Weâve come this far. Weâve narrowly survived being eaten by demons, crushed in a cave-in, or decapitated by these traps. Weâve done it on nothing more than his word, and your faith that your old friend here is on the level and is not leading us all to our deaths. Now we are trapped in a place between worlds, and the whole edifice seems to be coming apart at the seams. And all he can tell us is to expect the wrath of God. Screw that, I want more.â
âShe has a point, Murdoch,â Dizzy said. âYouâve always been family to us, so stop keeping us on the sidelines.â
Murdoch sighed. âI would love to tell you more than that, but in my visits here, I always followed the same protocol. The templeâs defenses were never truly activated, and I have no idea exactly whatâs waiting for us behind that door, other than the Grail.â
âUnless we make a move, itâs not going to be there either.â
If someone else triggered the sanctumâs defenses, then they were already ahead of us and winning the race for the Grail.
I cursed our luck. Always a step behind.
The door vanished into the floor, and the grinding noise ceased.
âI donât think itâs going to be that straightforward,â Murdoch whispered. âLook for yourself.â
The inner sanctum of the Holy Grail took my breath away. It was a monolithic structure the size of several football fields, easily ten stories tall. I couldnât see the roof from where we stood. In the center of the chamber loomed a massive tower.
On the other side of the door stood a small platform, perhaps fifteen feet wide and ten feet deep which led to a massive suspension bridge.
The bridge crossed a chasm from our platform to what seemed to be a chamber on the central spire. As I searched the chamber, I noticed other bridges like ours.
If we were at the southern point of the compass, then the other bridges were on the east and on the west.
The entire structure seemed to be formed from precious metals. The top third of the cavern, including the central spire, was made of solid gold. The middle third was fashioned of silver, and the bottom third appeared to be made of bronze.
